Every now and again I bleet on about good the Mac is.

http://www.apple.com/uk/macmini/

With the lauanch of the new Mac Mini will Apple increase its market share?

There are no viruses on Mac os x (the last time I said that people listed a load of old os9 ones) - but as Apple becomes more popular will they start coming?

I have no virus software on my PowerBook where as I am constantly having to update the latest virus software on the xp machines.

I had a mac for one month and got rid of it. Even with G3 B&W with 500mhz processor and 640mb of ram OSX would run like a snail , this is with only two applications open. As soon as Safari was opened I would get that stupid beach ball appear and I would wait for the damn webpage to load. Firefox was not that much better either and Firefox is a decent browser. Forget about even running Dreamweaver MX 2004 or photoshop its just too slow in OSX. These applications run better in Linux using Wine than they do on a Mac.

I then looked in to a new Macs and they are just too expensive. Over £1000 for a new one. I could get loads for my money with a pc.

Not only that but OSX is like linux. As you know its built on Unix. If I want a mac I just install Linux Suse or Mandrake for £3.50 and I have a Virus free and Spyware free system.

If you want my honest opinion Apple will never get market share because they are too expensive and underpowered for the money, and when you have Linux getting bigger every week this is the more viable solution as you dont need a completely new system to install it. People can even trial Linux on a CD without having to install it on the hard drive.

These are just my personal opinions.

First I thought this thread was about a new Mark McCammon ofspring.
Then I thought it was perhaps a new McDonalds diet burger.
Utterly dismayed, its talk of a poxy old Apple computer that was once so superior to the IBM XT but is now one of the most overrated pieced of IT anyone could waste their money on !!

Thank you, Thank you...

Its underpowered. 256MB is NOT enough to run OSX

Its meant to be media capable. But its not got an audio input.

Its unupgradeable - one RAM slot, laptop HDD, 'sealed system' case. Open it and your warranty is gone, meaning you're forced to buy RAM upgrades, etc, at purchase time at Apple's inflated prices.

The software that comes with the system uis pretty much the only half-way decent software for the entire OS that doesn't cost serious money. Of the free apps I've installed, ALL of them are ports from Linux or Windows - Mozilla, OpenOffice, the GIMP, VideoLAN, Nvu. A lot of these apps are ported so badly that they don't match the system at all - no drag and drop, non-native interfaces, incompatible clipboards

As goes the virus issue, this is where Maccies bullshit. Bullshit a LOT.

There may be no viruses 'in the wild' for OSX, but there ARE trojans - lots of them according to NAI. The majority of them are in 'holed' software installers. There is also spyware. There are Mac versions of Norton and Mac-specific spyware and virus detection tools for a reason.

There are also around SIX HUNDRED viruses for the MacOS version of Microsoft Office. Which nearly every madhead has a copy of installed

Also, the claims that Mac's are faster clock-for-clock is bull also

http://www.barefeats.com/mac2pc.html for instance shows that PC's which are SLOWER in actual numbers than G5 systems are more powerful than it, in the Mac's own back garden - rendering.

The Mini has a G4. The G4 is Pentium III era - its only got a single data rate bus, not even double-pumped - the DDR RAM is included as a con job to make you think its faster. The mini is woefully under powered.

was overpriced - not now.

don't need an audio connection with airtunes.

Mac mini for £288

I just get less software issues on the Apples than on the microstuffed pissy's

G3 will not really run osx like saying xp on a pentium.

My G4 powerbook is the kiddie ... err and I got a short Dad:blush:

288 EX VAT for a machine with a slow OS, very little RAM, no monitor, no keyboard, no mouse and no upgradability

I'd rather spend 399 inclusive for a cheap Dell. At least Windows XP is usable on 256MB RAM. OSX isn't and never will be.

The G3 is a contemperary of the Pentium III. Which runs XP VERY DAMN WELL. Its just IBM really don't make good CPU's
