Luton and agents hit with charges

The Football Association has issued more than 50 charges in connection with alleged breaches of rules at Luton Town, after an extensive investigation.
The charges relate to player transfers and contract renegotiations between July 2004 and February 2007.

The club, former chairman Bill Tomlins, ex-finance director Derek Peter and current directors John Mitchell and Richard Bagehot have been charged.

Six licensed players' agents have also been charged.

The charges are as follows:

Luton Town have 17 charges, relating to payments to agents for nine specific player negotiations which were allegedly made through the club's holding company Jayten (also known as J10) Stadium Limited, rather than through the club as required by FA rules.

The Hatters have also been charged with provision of misleading information to the FA, not holding representation contracts with the relevant agents for the above negotiations, and dealing with unlicensed agents (both through Jayten and directly).

Former chairman Bill Tomlins has been handed 15 charges. It is alleged that he was directly involved in 19 of the rule breaches listed above (except negotiations with two unlicensed agents which were not conducted through Jayten).

Former finance director Derek Peter is alleged to have approved payments made by Jayten in relation to the nine player negotiations.

Current directors John Mitchell and Richard Bagehot are charged with failing to report the alleged rule breaches when they became aware of them.

Licensed players' agents Sky Andrew, Mike Berry, Mark Curtis, Stephen Denos, David Manasseh and Andrew Mills are each charged with failing to ensure that payments to them were made and disclosed through the proper channels, and failing to enter into representation contracts with the club for specific services rendered in relation to to above negotiations.

Wasn't Mike Newell censured as manager for making allegations of bungs being rife at Luton.

Sounds like he knew what he was talking about............
My thoughts exactly.

If proven then it has to be as bad as the Swindon affair of a few years ago. Would like to see them suffer a similar penalty of relegation.

Not sure a 10 point deduction is sufficient personally.

If they're found guilty of all or most of these charges, I'd have thought a points deduction is on its way.

Other clubs who've been found guilty of making illegal payments or writing dodgy contracts (Swindon, Spurs, Chesterfield) have been docked points. As it's not a Big Club, I can also see the ruling body making an example of them to a greater extent than they would if it was a richer club with lots of fans.

Relegation to Div 2 or lower that is the only way to stamp it out. The FA should have done the same with Leeds and madea rule that any club going into administration is automatically relegated to the lowest division and adjustments made accordingly with more teams being promoted. The same should happen with illegal payments as it is cheating. Cheats must not be allowed to prosper.

It would appear that Luton are going to at least get points docked and probably relegated, perhaps DK should offer to take Darren Currie on loan until Jan and then take over his contract permenantly. Paul Furlong loan until end of season?

Not Luton! Thank God
Times this morning seemed to think that a points deduction was unlikely, but I'll wait and see. Tomlins was the guy behind most of this and he's gone now, but the new chairman doesn't seem to be much better. He's seriously pissed off the supporters organisation by refusing them a seat at the board. The fact that we've got one point on our travels all year probably doesn't help.

A well known ex director of BHA once suggested the same of me but Brian Bedson ther then Chairman's answer was if he puts in the same money as each of us or somebody does it on his behalf he can havea seat on the board. I agree with him supporters should not have a seat on the board unless they can meet that criteria. Either them or the group they are representing put up the same amount of money as eacvh of the directors have.
