I know there have been a couple of these threads in the past (I've searched) but just wondered if anyone lately has had a loft conversion done and wanted to share some views on company you might recommend / avoid.

Looking to make space for a bedroom and en suite (shower not bath) with 2 or 3 Velux windows in Worthing.

Hopefully getting quotes from various firms over the next 7 days...

All non-sarcastic comments gratefully received!

Here, there and everywhere
Don't forget to get the building regulations done as well as planning. If and when you sell the place it could be difficult to get the building regs done retrospectively .. any decent company should be OK with this.

get the Haynes loft conversion manual to tell you all about what needs doing.

Be diligent. Get a contract, but make sure you get someone to check it out. There are many scam builders who will add costs and take a lonnnnggggggg time to complete. Good luck.

If you need planning and building regs drawings done, pm me.

Probably won't need planning permission though with the permitted development laws.

My neighbour has his own business doing such things and has done his own house next door to me. His attention to detail and quality seems second to none. He's always got plenty of jobs on so seems to be in demand, which is a good sign. Let me know if you want his details.

Don't know of anyone to recommend, but one warning that might be useful. I bought a house that already had a converted loft, in use as the main bedroom. It looked terrific, but ...

a) The roof slope came down in the room to about 3 foot from the floor on both sides. It looked fine, but as you couldn't comfortably walk around, it was a real pain if you wanted to go anywhere except the middle of the room.
b) The water pressure in the en-suite was terrible, without a special extra pump
c) I had velux windows on both north and south sides, which was fine until it rained, because whichever direction the rain was coming from, it was very, very loud on the windows
d) Because the original part of the house wasn't designed with extra stairs in mind, they were rather squeezed in, which meant they were narrow, and had too many turns in them and were too steep. Impossible to carry anything of any size up them.

I ended up moving into one of the spare room downstairs and not using that room.
