Here's the full article...and its worried me a bit.

We Could Lose Seats Over Stadium Decision

An MP fears he and Labour Party colleagues could lose their seats if Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott sounds the death knell for the Albion. Brighton Kemptown MP Des Turner believes the prospects for Labour's local MPs will be almost as bleak as the football club's chances of survival if Mr Prescott rejects Albion's plans for a 22,000-seat community stadium near Falmer station. All three Labour MPs in Brighton & Hove were elected for the first time in 1997 and successfully defended the former Conservative strongholds three years ago. Dr Turner's seat is a key Tory target with a majority of only 4,922. David Lepper will defend a majority of 9,643 in Brighton Pavilion while Defence Minister Ivor Caplin's majority in Hove is only 3,171.

Dr Turner said, "I don't think it would be helpful to any of us if the stadium was to be turned down. If it was a tight contest, it could swing the difference against us. There's obviously a large number of people who feel strongly about it and they will be very upset if it looks under threat." More than two-thirds of voters backed a stadium at Falmer in a city-wide referendum and 61,000 signed a petition in favour. Although the petition included people from every postal area in Great Britain, emphasising the national significance of the club, feeling is running particularly high in Brighton & Hove. The city council's planning committee voted 11-1 in favour of the stadium, which would regenerate one of the poorest council wards in the South East, but public inquiries were held last year into the city's Local Plan and the planning application.

Local Plan inspector Charles Hoile is recommending the Falmer site, next to a station and the A27, should not be allocated for a stadium. His findings have shocked Albion directors who believe they have a solid case and claim he disregarded crucial information. The three Brighton & Hove MPs plus Michael Foster (Hastings & Rye, Labour majority 4,308) and Laura Moffatt (Crawley, Labour majority 6,770) are urging Mr Prescott to support the stadium scheme, which has a very heavy emphasis on public transport.

They said in a letter to the Deputy Prime Minister, 'It is indisputable that a large community stadium would be a real boost to the economy in Sussex and would continue to be a focus for regeneration. 'It is a fact that the hotel and restaurant business is a key sector in each of our constituencies, and therefore it is important that these jobs are supported by other leisure activities. This stadium proposal would create a superb new leisure facility, without comparison in the region, able to host cultural events and attract new visitors. 'The success of this application is not just about football, although Brighton & Hove Albion FC play an important part in our local communities. The success of this planning application is, we believe, crucial to the future development of economy and the culture and leisure of this area. 'We therefore have no hesitation in commending this proposal to you and hope that the application will receive your support when you determine the final decision in the near future.' Mr Lepper said, "I hope the people will recognise that the three MPs for Brighton & Hove have consistently been doing all that they can to get this stadium. I'm reasonably confident that John Prescott will say 'yes', but this is a very important issue."

I am a bit surprised that they've actually come out and said this publically. It does leave them open to accusations of backing the plans just for their own political means, instead of basing their opinions purely on the merits of the application. OK, we all know that this is how politicians work, but to see them actually come out with it did cause my eyebrows to climb up my forehead just a little bit. We know the NIMBYS will jump all over anything to get the plans thrown out...does this not give them more ammo ?

Or am I just being paranoid ?

Agree, I've been thinking for ages that I hope Prescott makes this a political decision, but I'm a bit surprised they've come out and said it.

I'd have thought they'd have mentioned it to Two Jags over their morning donut in the House of Commons. Still, as long as he's aware.....

Paranoia.

They have said it quite late - but better late than never. They are only expressing their concerns over things we have already been saying. Remember, they are our representatives in Parliament.

They have stated before their public support and commitment to the Albion and to Falmer. The Argus probably asked them a direct question, from which for once some politicians gave some direct answers.

Its great that they back the plans, and I'm all for them coming out with the support for it....but NOT when they then go on to say that they're concerned about losing their seats if the plans are turned down. We want it backed because they believe its a good, robust plan, definately not just because they can see themselves losing votes and seats over it if JP says no.

That kind of publicity does us no favours whatsoever. Grounds for a Judicial Review ? Reassurance please !

I don't care WHY they support it. Their concerns are merely one more aspect that Prescott COULD take into consideration. It's nowhere near grounds for a judicial review.

You have to go to court to get one of those and (in this instance) prove that Prescott was swayed by the possibility of losing votes. There is no way that can be proven, even if that was grounds for a review. Even if the Stadium Inquiry Inspector says NO, and Prescott says YES, that in itself is not grounds for a judicial review as Prescott has the right to say what he wants. The Inspector's report is a recommendation.

Perversely, the Inspector could say YES, and Prescott says NO. However, I wouldn't even go there if I was you.

You can assume that the football supporters of Newcastle and other places will be watching this decision as well.

I agree with Desert Orchid. The reasons for supporting the stadium are contained in the letter to Prescott, and are all based on sound points about the local area.

They haven't said in that letter that Falmer should be given the go-ahead to prevent them possibly losing their seats. It's obvious that could be the outcome anyway.

A stroke of genius by the MP's..Unfortunately this is the only way to do things in this day and age.All MP's even cabinet ministers would rather leak to the press than talk to Prescott or Blair.it is a sighn of the media times.

I wrote a letter syaing that even though i lived out of Brighton & Hove, i would not be voting labour if the falmer scheme bombs because it is something i care about and is relevant to my future and my childs future....Supporting the Albion.

I can't be the only one who letters like this so the government must no they will lose votes if the wrong decision is made.

If Prescott syas yes they will say they contributed to the positive decision.

If Prescott says no, they will point out to anyone that will listen that they fully supported the plan in every way they could, pleaded on bended knee with Prescott - what more could we do - we had the community interest at heart but the decision was out of our hands. We will always fight tooth and nail for the community whatever the odds - we're great - vote for us again and we will ensure that we fight along side the club agian to secure a ground - honest, we love you all.

Whichever way it goes they will seek political gain from the situation.

Are they pressure-sensitive golden bog-pans (seat of the no pants) Mr Prescott?

Whoops, this reply was on another thread as well!

I need to make a clear distinction here as to what my point is. There's 2 takes that the local MP's can come out with on the Falmer project, but one of them is very dangerous in my opinion.

1. MP's can say "yes, this is a robust plan which will benefit Brighton & Hove in the long term. It is a sound application, local economic benefits, etc, no other viable site, etc." No problem with that. I'm pleased with MP's publically taking that stance and writing to the DPM with those points - no harm whatsoever, and it does whole campaign the power of good.

BUT if they come out with....(and I'm quoting D Turner, Labour MP for Kemptown here)

2. "I don't think it would be helpful to any of us if the stadium was to be turned down. If it was a tight contest, it could swing the difference against us". THAT is what I have a VERY BIG PROBLEM WITH. That can only point to one thing - they are making their decision to back the plan NOT on whether they really think its viable or robust, but on whether they end up keeping their seat or not.

Now we all KNOW that MP's would probably back it one way or the other based on that, but they could always deny it. Thats how politics work, innit. But when its gone out in the public domain that they ARE openly concerned about their seats based onn the Falmer decision - that, I'm afraid, does not make good reading to me.

Time to switch the focus to the local MPs one would have thought. A short sharp campaign that gets them to relay the message back up the food chain to Two Jags pronto tonto. Maybe point out that Prescott has this bright shiny new anti-NIMBY set of policies that Falmer is going to be a test case for.

GAAAAAH !!
Come on Tom, as someone who was at the Inquiry and wrote some beautifully insightful threads as a result, I just KNOW you know what I'm going on about here.

You are absolutely right in your post. But the whole issue of this thread is that the NIMBYS now have a King Sized Cornetto with nuts and chocolate sauce to push into our faces. The MP's are running scared of losing their seats - THATS why they are backing Falmer. Not cos they think its a worthwhile project. Not cos they think it'll benefit the community. They're backing it because they're scared of losing their seats.

Is that not a problem for our Crusade ? Please tell me I am overreacting. Please.

Nah mate, you're not over-reacting. These are scarey times & this is infinitely more important than Hereford. All these politico swine are running scared and will vote on whatever decision allows them to keep their snouts in the trough for the foreseeable. But this ain't just another planning application to be given the thumbs ap or the the thumbs down. Truth is, in what even the Argus acklowledges is a time of changed demographics, the City's football team is one of the most visible things that can bond all the citizens of B&H together and allow them to have a shared pride in the City. Destroy that and you destroy any reason to vote for the formerly good-guy Labour MPs who you entrusted to make the right choices for the voters and apply pressure to Prescott accordingly.

KTF
