can anyone help me on the rules please.... i thought the linesman did not " wave" his flag for offside until the player in the offside postion becomes involved with play... is that right. ???? i only ask cause the bloke who sits behind me constantly moans about how slow the linesman is to flag offside.... and i thought this is because the ball had only just reached the player who is offside....
can anyone tell me where i could get this info from the internet cause i want to show it to him to shut him up.
cheers:shrug:

If you type in yahoo : sussex county football association they should have the rules on there.

Yes you are right the lino should not flag untill the player in the offside positions comes into play or touches the ball.

Will somebody please clarify the rules and advise the assistant referees as each individual one has a different interpretation of it, so it appears.

Huiddersfield goalkeeper pushed a ball out and Kalou followed up and scored and it was disallowed for offside. In the past that action by the keeper put the attacker back on side, and so it should, but not now, it is when the shot was taken soa goalkeeper can now fumble to his hearts delight until he collects the ball.

That's offside and has always been offside.

Wrong it was always, when I passed my Refs badges in 1960, if the ball was last touched by a defender it played the attacker on side even a slight deflection off of a missed header that glanced across the defenders head.

I don't know about in 1960, but for at least the last ten years the goalkeeper touching the ball has not affected offside decisions.

I thought the issue of flagging a player offside had changed again... is it not now the case that someone is offside if they are 'interfering with play'? So they don't necessarily have to touch the ball to be offside.

Balls coming off defenders is one of the areas that is now open to interpretation... was the player offside BEFORE the ball hit the defender? If so, they are normally given offside. Whether they should be or not is up for debate.

It all centres around "gaining or seeking to gain an advantage" so it may not be immediately the flag goes up. We are now taught and the information I give to my Assistants is that I would rather have a late flag than an incorrect one. General rule of thumb is to count to 3 before raising the flag. Different Refs have different views on when to get their Assistants to raise the flag. So that is where some of the "inconsistency" comes from.

My son told me that the teams he manages in the Mid Sussex League and his Sunday side are topld by the refs not to flag for offside or fouls just the ball going out of play and the direction of the throw. They say that they will decide evrything else. To me this seems a bit pointless having a lino if that is the case because the majority of the refs at that l;evel are well past being able to run to keep up with play to judge an offside..

When the shot was hit, Kalou was in an offside position. Even though the keeper saved it, Kalou was gaining an unfair advantage by being in said position, therefore the offside decision was correct.
