In a spin off from the "Do you go to Church?" thread, do you believe in an afterlife? Heaven/Hell? Reincarnation?

One thing about life that I really wanna know is what happens when we die, I know it sounds odd but its amazed me since I was a kid watching Ghost movies. You must've heard of people claiming to almost die and see "light at the end of a tunnel" and people claiming that dead relatives tell them "its not your time yet" and stuff like that. So what do you think?...vote and discuss

To those of you who are over 40, have you ever wondered why you still feel exactly the same inside and almost get a shock when you look in the mirror.

Why are you so totally unique from your brothers and sisters but yet you come from the same gene pool?

It is because you have a soul which lives on after your body gives up.

Hither (sometimes Thither)
No chance.

I've had enough of this life. I can't be arsed living for eternity on some crowded cloud without a mouth to eat crisps with.
No no no.

A positive answer demands concession to belief in a 'soul', and i don't have one of those. I'm just a set of happy atoms.

I'd like to believe in something after death but there is absolutely nothing to suggest that there is.:(

I hope I'm wrong

Over there.
I think the worst thing would be is if iut was like sleep, because...when you're asleep you don't know that you're asleep, you don't think, you just cease to exist over night. And i personally think that's horrible. They could at least give you a warning or something. :shootself

As a confirmed Grumpy Old Git ( her indoor's words, not mine ) I'd settle for any kind of 'Life' during Life at the moment.

No Yorkie, its because there are a finite and abosolute number of atoms in the system we call the universe. Each one of us is a unique (and time varying) collection of them and they are organised in a configuration that we identify as us, other people, trees, things etc. Over time this configuration changes and hence we observe things like our hair colur varying, skin texture changing etc. The collection of atoms in our brains is, however, and more constant configuration and hence we have memory, feelings, reasoning etc. Over time this does change, sometimes in a major way (eg senility) and differennt connections become more prominent. Hense very old people can often have lucid childhood recollections. When we die, the atoms that constituted us slowly return to this pool of material and equilibrium is maintained.

So, nothing to do with a soul, thats just a reason developed to keep people enslaved to religiuos and political ideologies.

I just hope where ever I go my other half will be there too - I only just found him and one life time isn't going to be enough...

LIVING IN SIN
people hope there is some afterlife as whats the point in it all?

i believe once your dead your dead, id like to believe there was something else. i hope im wrong though.

ghosts are just like a video recording of the time they were alive and every so often it gets played back in the present.

Needless to say I agree with you! I didn't contribute to the 'Do you go to church?' thread as we've done it before and it just ends up with the non-believers calling us supersitious idiots and us saying, well it's your choice. No one converts anyone and it just ends up as a soapbox - although I've noticed that it's the non-believers who do most of the ranting!

chip I am more than just a collection of atoms I assure you. Even new born babies have different personalities. In fact my children were very different whilst I carried them in my womb

I am not enslaved to anything.

I made my own choice.

:)

Assuming there is no life after death, I think it's very sobering to think that once you die, that's it. A lot of things can be repeated...

In May the football season ends but we know it'll be back in three months.

A total eclipse of the sun happens once every few years but you know there'll be another one eventually.

But, when you die, that's it - not for one year, not a hundred years - you can't even wait several million years to be alive again - that's it, forever. :nono:

As an individual human being, once you're dead, that really is it.

But thats why people have children, not only to keep the human race going, but to keep their own genes going as well.

My God, there must be a lot of intelligent handsome little blighters who look like me out there somewhere :D
