The US ambassador to Libya has died after an attack by militiamen on the US consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi, reports say.

Ambassador Christopher Stevens is said to be among four US officials killed in a protest over a US-produced film that is said to insult the Prophet Muhammad.

The US state department has only confirmed the death of one official - but it has not named them.

Protesters have also attacked the US embassy in Cairo over the film.

In the attack in Benghazi, unidentified armed men stormed the grounds, shooting at buildings and throwing handmade bombs into the compound.

Security forces returned fire but Libyan officials say they were overwhelmed.

A Libyan official has said Ambassador Stevens died from suffocation as a result of the attack.

Sickening after the massive support "the west" gave them to have the freedom to be able to demonstrate

A good friend of mine works in Tripoli, he's coming over for the Wednesday game on Friday, I wonder how soon he will be going back. Pretty piss poor behaviour really, after all the effort recently by the likes of the UK, USA and Europe put into helping the country get rid of Gaddaffi.

It's like living in the Dark Ages, there really are some STUPID people in this world and unfortunately some of them have guns.

The attack was in response to a video made by someone from California with anti-Islamic views, which was translated into Arabic so Libyans know what is being said. Was demonstrations at the US Embassy in Cairo too, where they broke into it and ripped down the US flag (which was at half mast for 9/11).

Doesnt make it any better though, throwing grenades and attacking an embassy because of a video is over the top and killing 4 people who have nothing to do with it is disgusting, so something else must be at play here as this amount of violence cant be over a video. The person who made the video should be ashamed too.

I'm sure the film maker wasn't too bright but there really is no excuse for MURDERING random Americans in response.

I agree but hope the filmmakers are held to account for what their actions have caused, which was probably their intention after all.

f*** off. They made a film. I have not seen it, but from what I understand, it insults some mythical geezer. So what?

People have been murdered. There really is no comparison. Sadly, they do seem to be linked, which just goes to show how mind blowing stupid so people are who connect themselves to the so called religion of Islam - actually to any religion IMO, but that's another matter.

It's the equivalent of a kid (let's call him Kid A) in a school playground insulting Kid B's mother and Kid B retaliating by beating the shit out of one of Kid A's classmates. It's UTTERLY childish in this day and age.

Or perhaps killing them, and a couple of others.

If we are resorting to childish insults (not sure what warranted it) then f*** off yourself.

Otherwise my point is they made that film knowing the likely reaction it would cause (and probably looking to cause it) and they should be accountable in some way.

I am obviously not condoning the reaction in any way.

I'm not sure they made the film with the intention of causing extremists to kill a load of Americans.

So is your view that fims shouldnt be made if they are likely to cause a reaction or offence ?

Unfortunately no.

Very touchy people our muslim 'brothers' and they automatically link a citizen's actions (or 'free speech') to the government - this as a result of living under dictators

Depends if they take some responsibility I guess. Everyone knows it is like stirring up a hornets nest so why do it?

Do you think it would be ok for me to go around killing Islamists if they insulted my god?

These people who have murdered these Americans are vermin who should be arrested for their actions, but nothing with happen to these people.
I'm getting sick and tired of us and the USA and other countries tying to sort out violence in 3rd world countries, and other unfortunate places, only to have actions like this taken against them, same as what the afghan police are doing to our soldiers.
Yes we need rules to stop anarchy, but f*** me, send Rambo into Libya to sort it out
