I assume you mean 'bus lane'?

Motorcycles, buses and taxis can use the bus lane (motorcycles for a trial period). Cycles have their own lane.

Yes i did

As a motorcyclist i often get confused which bus lanes i can use and which i can't, i know there all marked but it would be nice if they standardised.
why is it for a trial period only? what are they trialling?

I think to see if there's a benefit to all road users in allowing this subset of vehicles to use the bus lane, thereby clearing more space for the car lane.

Once you are in the bus lane, you should stay in the bus lane (which might mean coming to a halt behind a bus when it is stationary at a bus stop). Weaving from one lane to another and back again is (a) hazardous and (b) likely to cause the traffic in the main (non-bus) lane to have to travel at uneven speeds to allow for the weaving vehicle. This reduces the efficiency of the road and leads to longer queues.

My experience of Lewes Road is that traffic is flowing more smoothly than previously. Queuing arises mainly as a result of the continuing roadworks (that are nearly, but not quite, finished).

Why would the cameras be illegal ? It is a BUS lane, so the camera is catching people breaking the rules - nothing illegal about that.

It is illegal if there is no signage for it though.

I believe they also require a RTO.

This is a disaster yesterday evening I sad in a que of traffic in the Lewes road for 10 mins during which time one bus and two cyclists went by this is a daft as the old Shoureham road cycle lane were we have a que of traffic as never before

Also I read somewhere that cameras put up only to catch someone in a bus lane are illegal.

It was in the Argus earlier this year IRRC. Something to do with the original application / roadworks totally finishing in Feb '14 therefore any tickets issued before then are not valid.

Can't remember exact details though.

I thought it was going to be a 20mph zone? Did I just get confused or have they changed their minds?

20mph from the Vogue Gyratory further into town via Lewes and Upper Lewes roads.

Agree with the thinking behind it but do the powers to be really expect the taxi drivers using the bus lane to patiently sit behind a stationary bus at a stop ? It's not going to happen is it they will be be switching lanes constantly Or will the cameras pick up the offending vehicles, or would it not be an actual offence for either taxi's or motorcycles to changes lanes to and from a bus lane.I had assume the solid white was for this purpose?

On this basis if was perceived to be a problem could raxi's be excluded or is it a given theat taxi's are permitted to use all bus lanes are a matter of course?

I thought this was the very purpose of bus lanes, to speed up the bus service regardless as to the detriment of other roads users.
Hence the two lanes traveling at uneven speeds.

I was talking about the effect of traffic, such as motorcycles, weaving in and out of the main traffic lane. This causes the vehicles in the main lane to brake. And braking causes irregular speeds and longer queues to form.

In other words, bus lanes work best if they are restricted to vehicles that will stay in them all the time. Motorcyclists won't. They are weavers.

"As never before"? Before the bypass was built, much of Lewes Road was a single carriageway road, carrying MORE traffic than it does now. And the delays were longer.

Do you mean a TRO - Traffic Regulation Order? If not, what's an RTO?

Now you mention that, I think I do recall.

IIRC, the issue was that evidence from the cameras isn't enforceable until all of the roadworks have finished, which is due to be December. This year.

In places across the city where private cars aren't supposed to go (e.g. southbound London Road, eastbound North Street and daytime Western Road), buses and taxis share the same road space.

The roadworks have finished 3 months early so the cameras come into affect next week instead of January 2014.

The police have said that they can not and will not enforce the 20mph limit anyway, pointless limit for as you use a lower gear, burn more petrol and therefore damage the O zone more do you not.

Hate the 20mph limit going up Elm grove is a pain in the backside now.

I've not used the Elm Grove one but I often drive in the Hove zone and haven't noticed a difference .......... because everyone is still driving at 30 !!!!!!!!!!!
