Lewes Bonfire

Couldn't see anything posted about this yet after running a search, so apologies in advance if that is the case.

I'm planning on taking my girlfriend to Lewes to experience the procession and hopefully part of a display, likely going Wivelsfield-Lewes on the train. I've done this before and generally been OK getting back when heading back to the station for around 10pm without too much queuing.

I've had a look on the Lewes Bonfire Society website, but they seem very reluctant to put any information online - presumably as I know they aren't very keen on having visitors to Lewes on the day, and want to avoid encouraging this by giving out too much information ahead of the day.

Last time around, I headed to Waterloo in the field by Tesco, but remember that it was very late starting and ended up standing around until 10pm with nothing much happening. Does anyone know if the displays, particularly Waterloo which I understand is the only free one, is still scheduled to start around 9.30pm?

Stay away....any outsiders are not welcome. It's a bit like JCL's going to the Amex. Keep away....you've been warned.

However if you do come in....head for Commercial square bonfire, my garden backs onto the fire site. Most fireworks start at 10 ish....it has been as late as 11 in the past.

All the displays are free except Cliffe so waterloo and commercial sq are free. As it's on a saturday this year, i'd advise anyone to get into Lewes early....2pm onwards and plan your escape if you're coming by train or bus.

All sounds a little bit dramatic. I've been two or three times before for the processions and never had a problem at all. Just tricky getting away again after 10pm, which coincides with the times that the firework displays begin. Makes it a choice of watching, or actually getting away from Lewes.

In fact, the only way in which they like outsiders to be involved is in helping them ensure it causes as much disruption to everyone else as possible.

I normally drive but decided to get the train as I want to have a drink this year, my missus brother is 22 and never been before so I'm taking him to experience it.

They're the best bonfire celebrations in the country and I think everyone should experience them at least once.

Haven't been for at least ten years, daughters currently a bit young for the Lewes experience. I have always enjoyed it and on a couple of occasions have managed to stay to the bitter end when some of the "boys" (probably "the better for drink") do the jumping through the flames bit by the Court.

GOSBTS never sounds better than when being blasted out by the Kohima Band at Lewes Bonfire, especially when done well after midnight!

I think they did, but only because the council said they should have burnt at least 5 caravans!!

The train station is a fair old walk from commercial sq and would take ages to get there and the queues will probably be as bad as the Amex

Where is the best place to meet a taxi? I'm thinking the cliffe industrial estate maybe??
