we can't attract any players to the club. In my opinion its for two reasons, the whole stadium/money/club situation and the fact we have a charismaless manager who plays dull football, and players don't want to come and play for him.

Adams, Taylor and Coppout didn't have too much difficulty attracting players better than wee have now.

And they were oh so loyal...........................not

There is a certain reality about following a club like Brighton that punches above its weight, and that reality is that sooner or later the relative financial position of the club will tell.

If you take the example of Crewe, where they have continued to churn out decent footballers, they've had a few good seasons where they bounce up to Div1, and a few seasons where they knock about in Div2. Their recent time in the CCC coincides with playing their usual brand of neat football but crucially having a couple of strikers in Ashton and Hulse who could bang the goals in. The relatively recent loss of both these players sticks them in their current predicament. Their football remains similar, but they haven't managed to replace the goals. They're a LG1 club.

If you look at Brighton, the positive investment in youth provides for the success that we are all busy celebrating at that level, and well done the team and coaches for achieving it. We have yet to replace the goals of BZ, and to a lesser extent LK, which makes us potentially - though not yet - a LG1 club. When we do replace them (through shrewd/lucky business or the youth team) we will be a CCC club. What we cannot do is pay the going rate for guaranteed goals - Face in the Crowd has ably demonstrated why.

Paying 100k for BZ was hitting a vein of pure gold, and it's easy to forget with the benefit of hindsight that he was bought to propel us up from the bottom tier; as far as I know there hadn't been a scrum from 24 Div1 clubs (as was) for his signature. Had there been would he have ended up at the Withdean? He grew as the team grew, and he was a fantastic servant to the club. I would question whether when they scouted him, the club said "this boy's got premiership quality written all over him." I would guess that the word they were applying to him was "potential." What he did with it is down to Bobby.

Whilst it is easy to question some signings made by some managers, everyone in that job is looking for another Bobby. I for one do not think they are that easy to track down, and understand why a club that punches above its weight such as ours has to take a punt every now and again.

Get me to Falmer, get me a team of products of the youth system to play there, and then watch us compete on a more even footing with those clubs that are fortunate enough to have their new stadia. I'd love for that to be in the CCC, but LG1 will do me so long as the club is intact, the debt manageable, and there's a seat there for me....

These days, comparing BHAFC to Hereford is as poignant as comparing Chelsea to Leatherhead, for me. We have moved a little way away from there, even through all the battles and harangueings. Mickey Adams managed to do something with a shambles, and we hoped that can still be built upon.

There have been sides that achieved more than was ever expected, before, and with low funds.

It's a flat ground with 11 professional footballers against another 11 moving a ball around. It's about talent and determination, application, training, tactics, teamwork, individual enterprise. It's not all about money and how many people are watching.

The 11 who play against us are normally players recruited on the strength of The salary & the facilities on offer by either profitable businesses or those with mountains of debt doing ostrich impersonations. We fall into neither category. As I asked earlier, if you were a promising young player like Fryatt, would you sign for The Albion if you had options? That is one of the reasons that we have a conference player like Kerry Mayo playing both out of his depth & out of position. What chance did he have against McSheffery (I think that's how you spell it) of Coventry?

Valid points, but Mayo was once a player punching his weight, not above it, but no recent manager has found anyone better (?) - and perhaps we should be wondering why our recent youth policy has not borne more fruit. There are undiscovered players out there who'd leap at the chance to play in the league, and other clubs are finding and recruiting them.

No, it read more like a put down.

Don't people use imo or imho anymore?

Is that necessary?

I think it's pretty implicit from this being a Message Board, without having to tag something on the end. I'm sure even the most simple people can work out what's opinion and what's fact.

... er, in my opinion, of course ...

No, I don't think they can. People are still talking about Tourienzo costing £150K.
It is an urban myth now. Nobody knows for sure but still talked about as FACT.

Hmm ... well, that's exactly the figure I've heard from that good old thing, a "reliable source". As far as I'm concerned, that is fact. FACT, whatever.

Ask your reliable source to break it down. Weekly wage, appearance money, win bonuses, goal bonuses etc and then I may be inclined to believe it.

Bit harsh

The youth team has produced Virgo, Harding, El Abd, Lynch, Robinson, Martin, Hammond, Gatting and Elphick. That was never the case before, although it may be due to our financial constraints that they are getting their chances.

As for the undiscovered players, we don't even have a chief scout, so the chances of us finding these rough diamonds is diminished. CKR was supposed to be such a player, he certainly has the ability to succeed at this level, time will tell if he wants it enough. Ability without application won't get him a regular game.

Exactly. People moan about wasting money but how much is actually wasted?
Molango was only on £400 a week but £1000 a goal. Good incentive but he only got paid out once.

Finding players like Ward and Zamora only happen every 20 years or so. Some of our fans think we can do it on a regular basis.

Although it did look for while that Leon could have been one of those players. It has as much to do with character and application as skill. Maybe CKR will be another Ward or BZ but he could just as easily be another Leon
