First Division leaders Wigan have had a bid accepted for Peterborough striker Leon McKenzie. The clubs have agreed an undisclosed fee for the 25-year-old, but Wigan are struggling to meet the player's personal terms. Wigan boss Paul Jewell said: "We've spoken to the player's agent but he's looking for too much money. "That means that at the moment, no progress is going to be made." "We've had a bid accepted by Peterborough for the player but that's basically as far as it's gone so far."
McKenzie has scored 51 goals in 94 league starts for Peterborough since joining the club, initially on loan, from Crystal Palace in August, 1998. He has been in good form this season, scoring seven goals, including six in his last six games.

I think old fatboy Fry is in a lot of Shit.... They hardly had any support at Posh on Saturday and having to sell their top Striker is desperate when your 3rd from bottom. LM is a good player and it will be interesting how much Wigan pay for him.

He'll leave at the end of the season on a free when he can make his demands regarding wages. Boro will get nothing for him.

Agreed.

David Pleat was at our game tonight, no idea who he was watching but the Brentford side is stuffed full of youngsters just now isn't it?

McKenzie has priced himself out of a move to Wigan through his wage demands. He probably does not realise that you can buy a five bedroomed detached mock edwardian house (with indoor swimming pool) there for a tenner and still have enough change to buy a kebab.

Can't blame him, the area has few redeeming features

McKenzie was quoted in the local paper saying that the negotiations with Wigan were "cat and mouse" and he was prepared to see the season out at Posh.

He's a free agent at the end of the season and can sign a pre-contract agreement in January. Converting some of the transfer fee due to Posh into a personal signing-on fee makes perfect sense - if you're a player.

In the current football climate (most clubs have F all money), it seems a dumb thing to do to demand too much money. Perhaps he's started believing Barry Fry's bullshit that he's a premiership player.

I wonder how ridiculous his demands were. I think players are going to have to face a reality check soon as the clubs are starting to finally tighten their belts a little.

Wigan have pulled the plug on their attempts to sign Peterborough striker Leon McKenzie.
The Division One leaders had a bid accepted for the highly-rated striker earlier on Tuesday, but the move has collapsed after the club failed to to reach agreement with the player's agent on wages.

Wigan boss Paul Jewell admitted he was disappointed to see the deal fall through.

"It's no surprise these days when agents push for the those kinds of wages," said Jewell.

"The agents are entitled to ask for them, but we are entitled to say no, which is what we've done, so the deal is off.

"I'm a bit disappointed this was made public. We agreed a fee for the player, an honest and fair price, and then spoke to his agent.

"But it was obvious by the difference in figures that we were both wasting our time."

If Wigan can't afford him I doubt anyone else would want to sign if his demands are that great looks like he will be staying with Posh til the end of the season.
