Leon as a winger

Thoughts, ecetera?

McGhee got a hell of a lot of flak earlier this season for trying this, but today I thought it gave us the kind of wide creativity we lacked since Currie left.

Presumably he'll be back up front next week with Virgs still in the sinbin, but Leon as a winger could still be a useful tactic against some other teams. I gather the idea today was that as Sunderland commit their full-backs forward so often, McGhee thought they would be vulnerable down the flanks?

It's a useful option, although I'd generally like to see him up front. He's got to be our best crosser of the ball now, and those in-swingers (like the one which set up McCammon v Derby) are especially dangerous. He ran at defenders well today & hardly ever gave the ball away. Fair play to McGhee, he put him in there & it worked out quite nicely. Not sure I'd want to see it repeated away, but it gives us extra options when it comes to breaking down teams.

MM would be getting loadsa stick if the results were not goin our way. I am sure many on here are disgusted that their little darlin isn't playing up front but i think MM is a tactical genius. He does his homework and is brave enough to make the most out of the piss poor resources he has. Has to be Manager of the season in this div.

He's effective down the wing, but he doesn't like playing there.

Leon has been working his socks off down the wing(s). What he's been lacking in goals he's more than made up for in terms of his performance as a (ahem) 'good team player'. Boy's been a revelation

A Huddersfield fan said some time ago that he did his best work for them when he was played out wide rather than an out-and-out striker. Considering he scored quite a few goals that season it was an interesting comment to make.

When Leon played for Huddersfield he played in the centre. It was Sheff Wed who played him out on the wing.

I think McGhee will change the formation and positions for each game.

I think McCammon looked very effective upfront on his own.

He did not have to knock short passes and could concentrate on bullying defenders and getting his head down and running with the ball.

I think out best tactic would be McCammon upfront on his own with Leon getting freedom to roam. That way he could get wide, come deep or join in the attack. Less likely to get picked up and was the roll Chelsea were grooming him for as a replacement for Zola.

Absolutely which is why I am so impressed with him as a manager.

Tactics have been very good this season.

The only person who looks like Zola is Alexis

He was outstanding today and at one point looked like he needed oxygen after 2 or 3 runs down the right wing in the second half-such was his workrate.
