Smith is a decent player. Does not get great service but works really hard even if he is not as prolific as some. I think (in the current marketplace) he is worth every penny.

SMITH FOR ENGLAND!

If Michael Owen is worth £25m (according to this article) then may be Smith is worth £10m. Given that Michael Owen is worth about £10m tops, I would say £5m is about right for Smith.

The Leeds board really are a bunch of spanners.

They'll end up taking what they're given and are in no position to name their price.

f*** knows what he's worth, but he's not as good as £7m (+BZ) Jermaine Defoe, that's for sure.

It's a simple equation really. Will you get back (at least) what to fork out on a player?

Will a team make an extra £10m because they have Smith in their side? I doubt it very much. Michael Owen has better earning potential for a club as he is an England regular and will raise the profile of the club. You'll be able to charge more for advertising etc. The only players than can command obscence transfer fees are those that will bring fans with them and get you loads of media coverage! Beckham, Henry, Zidane, Ronaldo etc...

Players like Smith are not too uncommen in the world market and so I really don't see a great deal of value in him especially has he's failed to find the net in what is not a weak side. Leeds in my view has a better squad than Pompey but they have been poorly managed.

Having watched him in the flesh playing for a very poor Leeds team with no Viduka alongside him at Old Trafford, I have to say that he really impressed me. He is pysically strong, always moving, holds the ball up brilliantly, passes well, and took the one chance he got. Worth more than two Defoes who will give you a good half-season before getting a strop on.

But I do agree that Leeds are not exactly in a position to negotiate. Administration and the loss of 12 points in Division One points to Division Two.

I think Smith is a very good player, under rated in my opinion.
Well worth about 7.5 i would think, wether they get that is a different matter.

Will score goals in a decent side for sure, better than Defoe in my opinion.

My only experience of seeing Smith play has not left me with the impression he is worth £10m. Yeah, he had a lot of energy, but then he kept giving away free kicks when Leeds were on the attack. Twice chances were created for him, twice he appeared to not know what to do next. He constantly backchatted to the ref - lucky not to get a yellow, I thought - and tried tp ick fights with fellow professionals who, being professionals, duly declined to get involved.

I suppose all that was very entertaining - and he clearly relishes entertaining a crowd both of Leeds fans and of the opponent's fans. But he isn't employed as a vaudeville entertainer - he's a footballer.

Singularly unimpressed, I'm afraid.
