Worthing
What a difference in our feelings for the Manager, Players and the Club itself in just 14 days.

Against Leeds we (supporters, players and staff) approached the game in exactly the right manner. We treated it like a cuptie – with us as the underdogs. We knew that we’d have to battle hard all the time to get anything out of it. The players were magnificent and the supporters were just that – very supportive. When we finally got the result we wanted then there was a huge outpouring of satisfaction and relief.

But against Crewe this was a game that we expected to win so, like little kids at the dinner table, we sat down and expected a banquet to be placed in front of us. When it didn’t appear then (again, just like little kids) we complained and demanded to be fed – getting more and more petulant with every passing minute. We certainly weren’t going to assist in the preparation – except to shout even louder that there was nothing on the table.

I get really fed up when I hear our own people (and no, they aren’t supporters) getting at our team. These people clearly have no idea about what it takes to make a success of anything. Instead, they expect to turn up at the weekly banquet and be fed and entertained – with no sympathy for anyone whose performance doesn’t match that of the premiership players they see on telly every Sunday. If the fayre isn’t exactly to their liking then they’re straight onto the Chef or the proprietor to express their thoughts in the crudest way possible. Frankly, these people don’t deserve to be thought of as supporters – and certainly don’t deserve to be treated as such.

The fact that they’re season ticket holders, been to hundreds of home and away matches, marched through Brighton, contributed to the ’save the Albion’ fund and burned an effigy of Bellotti & Archer still doesn’t entitle them to give out this sort of abuse. It wouldn’t be tolerated in any other public place – so why is it at a football match? Do they think that they’re contributing toward the success of the club? Do they think the players are encouraged? Did the people having a go at Piercy realise that he was giving his all even though he wasn’t well? Don’t they ever have bad days at work? We need to identify these people and treat them in the same way that society would anyone committing a public order offence – with a heavy fine. In this case the confiscation of their season tickets would do.
