Fascinating…to me anyway!

We did rather well that season!

Any properly old codgers on here remember that season? Who was our manager?

Bolton beat United 2-0 in the Cup final too

Through the fifties we had flirted with promotion. Common belief was that we backed off because the directors didn't want the expense of travelling all over England, which we'd have had to in the 2nd. division. In 1958 division 3(N) and (S) became divisions 3 and 4 - no no chance of avoiding long, expensive journeys.

So, oh well, might as well get promoted then - so we did (with the help of Watford rolling over 6-0 at the Goldstone in the final game to make sure we clinched the title - only one team went up).

Good knowledge!

That would have been the following season - Boxing Day(?) 1958 against Fulham in front of 36,747. I was at the next biggest 35,000 against Chelsea in the FA Cup 4th round in 1967, complete with rosette and rattle!

Rosettes …. the pin …. PBOBE would deem that a 5 year h&s ban.
