Last night's game and Gus' football philosophy

no I'm not saying we're the new Barcelona but it is interesting to see some of the things that Gus preaches played out by the best side in the world right now.

All season Gus has banged on about being 'brave' - his definition of brave being taking risks, not battering people, playing your way ot of trouble rather than just hoof it into the stands.

Couldn't help but admire Barcelona doing this all game. On the rare occassions Man U got near their box if they won the ball back they never paniced into a long clearance. Always comfortable and passing it to team mate.

I have been banging on about this since last night's first goal. I really "got it" in so far as what Gus is looking for last night. Easy to see why he is looking at "wide players" who can score goals, and not another "center forward" to replace Murray. I am sure he has no intention of playing with traditional "strikers" any more than Barcelona did. Exciting times, and IF we can get it right next year, I am sure we can go for promotion against "traditional" English football.

And that comes from someone who needed a lot of convincing!

I watched Barcelona beat a spanish side 5-0 on TV a few months ago. Came across the game by chance and watched it from start to finish. They were sublime. I think this match is regarded now as one of the best of all time (can't recall who they beat). Of course they were stunning - but I kept thinking all the way through "I see what Gus is trying to do". We're not doing it at their level obviously, but then again last night, you could see the similarity in the shapes and patterns of play we watch week in week out and what Barca do. If Gus can keep adding Gus shaped players (and the advantage of these is that they are not necessarily the most expensive players or the ones that other clubs are all chasing) and sticks to his guns, there is no reason why we cannot keep progressing at a very rapid rate.

In Gus We Trust.

Interesting notions. Granted rumours at this time of the year are a lot of speculation but given the players we're rumoured to be after it does look like a sensible theory. It would also go some way to explain why we didn't try that hard to keep Murray. There's no denying that watching Barcelona is thoroughly enjoyable.

Thing about this type of football is it can be played faster than any so called fast Premiership style-when Brazil Vs Argentina get going they can play for 90 mins at an incredible pace.

My non football loving wife, who did watch last night, just looked at me with the sort of pity reserved for Walter Mittys when I said "that's how Brighton try and play these days" about 10 mins from the end :lolol:

Known as Defending by keeping possession-something that at International level we never can achieve & why we will never win anything.
Do as we have always done -you know the rest

I think that you will find it goes ALL THE WAY to explaining why we did not want to spent too much of our budget on Murray.

The fluency of his passing game is only gonna get better as well, with better (technical) players, with better movement, playing on better pitches, with a greater understanding of what Gus wants. Christ I'm excited.

100% spot on.. exciting times ahead for all.. I just pray the whole of the Amex crowd 'GET THIS' come October even if we have a few defeats along the way ? I know the Withdeaners are mostly convinced but that still leaves 12000 others. Im sure the pitch size & quality will help us achieve this total football but talk of promotion I feel is a little too optermistic.

Maybe, but at least you can see a way it could happen on a reasonable budget, and there not being a need to buy all the highly sort after players on silly money. The even more exciting thing for me is what could happen when the "next generation" of players are developed in the Development Squad and get to move into the First Team after a couple of years of being coached in "Gus's style of play".

Given that Barcelona are such a small team I'd be fascinated to see them play Stoke on form. I can't get my head around the idea that you can play a team off the park but if they are bigger than you and direct, with strikers who know where the goal is, you are likely to concede a few?

Having said that, they gave one of the most resiliant teams of recent times an absolute hammering.

They may be short on stature, but my God they snap into tackles. Every one of them - including Messi - harried and hassled the Man U players when they had the ball for 90 minutes. Brilliant.

And this is why I believe Gus won't sign Michael Owen. Gus preaches fitness and to play the way we do we need players who play for the whole ninety minutes at that kind of relentless work rate.

...and they didn't seem to do too badly when the ball WAS in the air, either.

Absolutely correct and what surprised me was the fact that the reverse was also true - the way their individual players held on to possession when Man U was piling into them was so impressive.
