But it shows they intend batting on tomorrow. How Lancashire think they can do anything but draw - when they are still batting in their first innings on day three - is beyond me.

Still, since it hands us the championship, why should we complain?

Probably sounds simpler than it is, but if we can get Stuart Law out early tomorrow morning, I think Mushy will once again clean up the tail. Failing that, I suspect Lancashire might well declare shortly after they reach 400 runs, or their 8th wicket falls. It would deny us our run of maximum bowling points for the season.

It might be pissing in the wind for them, but it is a reasonably sound tactic.

How about this as a scenario?

Lancashire declare at 400.

We bat slowly and declare at 251 (shortly before close of play on Friday) - requiring them to bat again, but throwing down a gauntlet.

There'll only be time for another 100 overs in the game. They have a first innings lead of 149 runs. Do they hit a quick 100 to leave us with only 250 to win, and them with time to bowl us out?

Or do they aim to score more, but take up more time, leaving us with the relatively easy task of batting out for a draw?

The first option would deliver some exciting stuff. Including the possibility of a Sussex win.

Much more likely, of course, is that we will want to bat on for our own 400. Making a draw almost certain.

Either way, just as I'm not too bothered how many runs Lancashire get in their first innings, I can live with any total that we get in ours (provided we avoid the follow on).

That's what I would have thought.

But why are Lancashire batting so slowly? 3.32 runs per over - and no acceleration at all today.

Or is it that the Sussex bowling is really grinding them down?

Only 3 counties have never won the Championship, we are one of them, until a couple of days time that is!!!

Our bowling over the past couple of seasons has been our strength, even before Mushy came along. It was the batting which was inadequate, save Monty and Muzzer a couple of seasons ago. (Who remembers their 202 partnership against the Aussies at Hove?)

However, since Peter Moores was made cricket manager, things have really worked out well. In fact, Moores is so highly regarded, he is/was in the running to replace Duncan Fletcher as England manager. Mushy is of course a very useful acquisition, and I believe we would not nearly be champions-elect if it were not for him.

However, we have scored 15 centuries this season (including a couple of doubles), from eight different batsmen - and that list does not include Ambrose, who has hit the 90s three times. The form from each player has dovetailed throughout the season - look at the last match v Middlesex. Who would have predicted a career-best 168 from Davis? He trebled his season's score in that innnings.

Obviously some players have had stinkers, and some had great games, but EVERYONE has batted a very decent innings, or bowled extremely well. Hats off to Billy Taylor, who, as a second string bowler replacing Kirtley and/or Lewry this season has done brilliantly as a stand-in strike bowler.

In fact, hats off to all of them. Bloody brilliant.
