For the player it's a huge season right?

Age 24, so not a young player now, not by the standards of our squad. But has had as stop start an early career as any player I can remember.

Understandably we have concerns over his fitness so are going to having plenty of alternatives for his position, wherever that is. So he is going to have to get fit, get a chance to play, take the chance, stay fit. Because A, he presumably wants to get another deal with us or a similarly placed side, which seems impossible if he has another season largely on the sidelines. And B, he will want to start for Ghana in the world cup.

Very true. One of the downsides of bringing through talented young players, is that wizened old PL defenders know they can be kicked out of games, through persistent targeted fouls.

Some of the treatment Tariq was getting, and I think Evan as well, at times reminded me of that old black and white footage of Portugal trying and succeeding in kicking Pele out of the 1966 world cup

Including the option that it gives us a stronger hand in any negotiations if somebody comes in to try and buy him (not saying that this is the aim, but just pointing out the possibility).
