I can understand the 66% who didn't vote for them not being particularly impressed, but they seem to have dropped from 33.7% voters in the GE to just 16% support now. Quite strange.

1. Huge own goals eg WFP which would've very much have affected Labour voters.
2. Impatience. The young and not so young who need affordable homes, today or tomorrow, they don't see any change. Obviously after 25 years of it being kicked down the road, it wasn't to change in 11 months, but that doesn't help the sentiment for people in despair.
3. Employment in well paid jobs. Nothing has happened, in fact the ers NIC rise meant that employers aren't taking on staff. Again, partly not Labour's fault, decades of not following the wonderful German apprenticeship route has come home to roost.
4. Incumbent governments soon get a kicking, all bad news magnified. The honeymoon after 1997 a rarity.

There were really good politicians and brains in and around that cabinet. Also Darling (not you ) , Reid. But helped by a growing economy masterfully overseen by Ken Clarke.

But comparing Starmer, Raynor, Reeves, Cooper, Miliband, Mahmood, Streeting etc to Johnson, Truss, Badenoch, Patel, Kwarteng, Braverman, Hancock etc comes out a little differently.

It may be what you mean, but no one is going to be saying "GDP is up, and ahead of most of the G7, therefore Labour can have my vote."

People want to feel better off (which growth can help with), and if they feel better off they are more likely to vote for what they see as a winning formula.

building, construction, has very direct effect on growth, lots of employment, lots of visible change. some of course dont like that and that's why so little occurs (relative to the need) and their view determined too much for too long. if Labour pull their finger out it can lead to meaningful GDP growth and wider population will feel better. postive action, positive outlook. if they dont, we'll roll up to the next election with the opposition listing a string of broken promises and if GDP is weak it will make the case for change, any change.

It is crucial to almost everything:
- desperately needed new homes
- training people in vocational skills for life, as was the way from at least 1945 to the early 90's recession, in well paid professions and trades
- virtuous spins off such as some of those highly skilled folk set up businesses that employ and might even export. I know people who went to vocational colleges in either the 50's, 60;'s, 70's etc who ended up setting up successful electrical engineering companies.
