Fair point but the proportion who vote is probably comparable with the rest of us, I would think. The point is that they're not here to vote because term has ended, leases have expired or there's summer jobs or travelling to do. I've got no evidence for this - btw. Just my gut feeling.

Not if decisions are made simply by counting votes.

But if decisions are influenced by well-presented arguments, Emma Daniel will be an excellent councillor. She has many years experience of working with community and voluntary sector organisations in the city and fully understands the increasing role that they have in the delivery of local services. But she won't be bamboozled (as some are) by simplistic arguments that getting charities to take over previously council-provided services "will save money", because she understands the challenges of delivering quality services properly. If she can put the case for more effective partnership working between the council and the voluntary sector (and I think she will), we'll all be better off.

The groups are as follows:

Green 21 seats

Conservative 18 seats

Labour 14 seats

Independent 1 seat

Which means there will be some horsetrading to get difficult decisions made. Don't know if I prefer that method to the out and out majority rule, which being more polarised, means difficult decisions come from one party with the ensuing fall-out if it goes wrong

Good idea...perhaps the Tories will support the Fiscal policies of the Labour Party in exactly the same manner that they did when they were in opposition prior to the banking crisis.

Here in Hanover/Elm Grove we've had loads of electioneering recently from all parties - the most I've seen in nearly 20 years living here. And whilst I'd say there's a sizeable backlash against Greens - you'll have to take into account the student population who have mostly gone home for the summer. I think that has had a significant effect.

I've been saying this for a while. The greens have largely relied on student voters simply because they sound "cool". I remember BMXing down the level before the general election, they popped down to remind people they're pro legalisation of weed. A really pathetic stunt to get popular.

I despise the Green Party and hope they crumble as a result of Kitcat.

It's funny reminding CP supporters that they supported Labour's fiscal and monetary policy. The only thing they rejected was the recapitalization of banking reserves by buying shares to inject cash into them...

As with most things, you've got that spot on. In fact I reckon poor old Caroline Jackson will lose her seat thanks to the debacle of the Greens in power here. I'll never vote Green (probably never vote again) but she's a damn good constituency MP. Her intervention with preventing the Tesco Express or whatever they're called opposite the Franklin was a fantastic result.


By the way - talking of Hanover/Elm Grove - it's Patchfest tomorrow. Free family-oriented local festival that goes from strength to strength.

Good point,however the level of money we are borroring is at a rate HM Govt aka US is one we can level at under Labour it would be a payday loan.

In the early 80s, when elections were being held, if I visited my old nan in Scotland Street you only ever saw Labour posters in windows throughout Hanover - and that was when Thatch was in her pomp. So things have returned to normal, then. Mind you, back in those days, my dad who was a working class Tory, used to try and convince me that Militant Tendancy were planning to launch the revolution from his local, The Sir Charles Napier.

Wrong. In fact the Green candidate in the Argus was using the absence of the student vote as one of his main excuses.

Did they poll 2296 votes in the previous election, if so they have an argument?
