That WAS propaganda, actually. A story made up by the Chinese equivalent of 'The Daily Mash' and reported as fact by the western media. The same with the story about his uncle being fed to dogs. He had has uncle removed and killed, but he wasn't fed to starving dogs.

The propaganda surrounding North Korea is quite hilarious at times.

Because it's a secretive state and nobody knows anything about it, the propagandists let their imaginations run wild and they can get away with more or less anything! It's scary how people believe it all without question though.

why not go and live there for a few months and come back to report?

The society is closed and a little trigger happy, if there was oil it would have been invaded years ago.
As it is it's an annoyance that doesn't answer back, so the west can go into propaganda overdrive and nobody can say anything to the contrary.
If you throw enough rubbish, some of it will stick.

Just about every news story associated with Un ends up getting back tracked,
Nobody got fed to dogs, or flame-throwered (that is a word), the stories about his wife were embellished.

Well, obviously, all the Nurses smiles have been photoshopped out by the CIA to make it look like they are terrified of being in the presence of the Great Benevolent Leader.

The problem is that sounds a little bit 'tin foil hat'.
But it is something easily done if you want the narrative to remain the same, whether that be South Korea, the American's, Fox news, a disgruntled escapee.
It doesn't matter who it's the picture 'the world' wasn't to see so it's the one that will be picked up.
