How many 'blockbusters' does this country make and what value are they culturally and financially to the UK?

I'm just thinking of the independent films made in the UK that wouldn't have been made on the back of the notion that films should only be made in order to make money.

Withnail & I
The Life of Brian
Local Hero
Gregory's Girl
The Damned United
Still Crazy
Sexy Beast
Life Is Sweet
Secrets & Lies
High Hopes
etc.
All of these, apart from The Life of Brian are a load of old horse fart.
Don't see why the taxpayer should fund film when there are folk starving in East Brighton.

Life of Brian might be a decent enough film but I put on the Holy Grail the other day and my god was that shit, remember liking it as a kid but it's aged terribly and I found it so embarrassingly unfunny.
The Knights who say ni? f*** off.

I would also stop giving money to that embittered miserable bastard Scouser Jimmy Mcgovern or whatever his name is.

Every single thing I have ever watched left me feeling depressed and miserable.

WE NEED MORE HAPPY THINGS.

Although Reggie Perrin was quite sad last night

I am glad to read that Cameron is willing to fund a minimum of 15 Transformers-esque blockbusters a year at the gamblesome cost of £85bn to really get throwaway tripe for the masses spectacularly made.
Hopefully next he'll make sure that wannabe popsingers have to not sound American in their tone and will instead sound like squeaky, shrieky dames from the 1930s.

"I'm with bushy on this one; it's just Ken Loach trying to cover his own backside.

I'm all for using government funds to keep entry to art exhibitions free, etc. as long as that encourages people to go and see and use them. I'm not a fan of the government handing out money so that 12 people can 'appreciate' an exhibition on a very narrow topic in the back of beyond. It's the same with cinema; I'm happy to see government money used to encourage filmmakers to work in this country, as long as their work is then going to be appreicated by a decent volume of people."

What a load of COBBLERS. Or perhaps you'll be on the panel, judging what the rest of us should want to be watching, stuff that no doubt that won't provoke me to question anything and just let me meander along harmlessly.

A lot of the problem for independent cinema in this country is distribution. Skeletons and The Scouting Book For Boys were both great films but I had to wait for them to appear on DVD to see them.

Nail on head! Distribution and the lack of tax breaks have always been the prob in the modern era.

The Labour Govt did at least address the latter issue but the distribution issue is largely the preserve of market forces and dominant international corporations who have a stranglehold on the industry.

Those who do want to keep seeing great British films should keep turning up at Picturehouse Cinemas such as Duke Of York's and the like. The British film industry has improved tenfold in the past decade and a half....Cameron will undoubtedly return us to the state of affairs last seen in the previous Tory term of office if he has his way! :tosser:

It may be nice and easy to knock Ken Loach, but without "Cathy Come Home" in the 1960's thousands of families wouldnt have enjoyed decent housing, as a result of the Homeless Persons Act being introduced as a direct consequence of this TV drama. There arent many film makers that can say their work has influenced Government policy.

"Kes" has also been rated as one of the top ten British films of all time.

The British film industry should concentrate on making the kind of films that we are great at, Lock Stock, Brassed Off, The Full Monty, Calendar Girls, and others mentioned above. Why on earth would we want to compete with the multi-million pound US Hollywood blockbuster machine? Endless remakes and tired formulaic vehicles for superstar actors. We moan about players getting million pound contracts, but don't even blink an eye-lid when Denzil Washington negotiated £20m for a part in a film about a runaway train!!! Brilliant. Cameron can stick his 'happy indicator' up his friggin arsehole!!
