How many goalies do we need? We have three in the first team squad, not to mention the development players. I'm sure that a goalie is the last thing on Gus's shopping list

There is no way Bres is up to playing in the championship, he is good enough for league 1 as a second/first choice but ankergren is the only real choice we have so i still think we do.

Away at Northampton in League Cup, Poke was shit.

Away at Stoke in FA Cup, Brezovan was shit.

Whilst I think Brez has something about him, he is far to error prone imho.

Casper is relatively solid but still not entirely convinced in many aspects of his game. We don't have a brilliant number 1. We have a fairly solid number 1, a potentially excellent but also error prone number 2 and a shit number 3.

I thought we may go for Steve Simonsen at Sheff United, either way we could do with a new top keeper. I don't think ours are strong enough for an assault at a top 2 finish?? Hope to be proved wrong though

That is quite a fair summing up of the situation. As I have said I think Gus will have a look during the pre-season and August and if needed go to Arry and loan Cudicini at the end of the transfer window. He is very experienced but wont get a look in at Spurs, not even League Cup.

We are not going to, and do not need to, sign a keeper (baring a fantastic one who is a bargain coming up)... Gus and our goalie coach have said as much... I'll trust their judgement over anyone on here...

However, we do need a new central defender and full-back as 2 of Gus's 6 to be signed...

So - LUFC didn't even think he was worth retaining as a second string ?

I don't know. I don't know why the let him go, I'm putting forward ideas that are, I believe, equally as likely as them not thinking he was good enough.

It's possible him leaving leeds was as much his choice - not wanting to be second string, not wanting to take a pay cut to be second string. With his experience, and quality, he would not be the cheapest second choice keeper.

In fairness to Poke and Brezovan, neither had the sort of run in the team needed for a keeper to get used to our new system, and they were mostly with the second string in the cups. For me, Casper's shakier performances were early in the season, as he and the defence got used to their new roles. They mostly got over that and formed a more confident and competent unit. If either Brez or Poke had 6, 7, 8, or more games in a row with a full strength first team, I think they would improve on what we saw from them in their one off games (or in the case of Brez - a game every now and then)

They had Shane Higgs and Kasper Schmeichel. Caspers contract expired and they decided he was not needed. Several of my Leeds supporting friends and colleagues really disagreed with this decision.

They would have kept him on even as a number three gk. but didn't. Even we had four GKs on the books

I think we will be seriously found out in the Championship and will expand if anyone interested !

I really hope not. Casper IMO is the only keeper we have that would be able to handle the championship, Brez isn't good enough and please nobody can say Poke is either

Trouble is in such a competitive championship, you simply don't have 6,7 or 8 games to find your feet. They must hit the ground running.

A good keeper can be the difference between relegation and staying up - Play offs or just missing out.

Look at Arsenal as a prime example of a club playing great football but with less than brilliant Keepers, who have cost them games.

Most Arsenal fans trust Wenger, but most football fans/commentators can see their keepers are less than perfect......... as are ours.

They are not bad at all, but they are not brilliant

So you know better than our manager then? He thinks Brezovan and Poke are worth keeping and that is good enough for me. Gus and the coaching staff see them every day in training and none of us do.

Also, to say Brezovan and Poke aren't up to it because of the Stoke and Northampton games (as peterward seems to) is extremely harsh. Poke had a poor pre season and that went in to the Northampton game where he had a bad night but the coaching staff have obviously seen something in him and rate him. As for Brezovan, we are not going to play a team like Stoke all year and Premier League keepers struggle with their tactics. To write him off due to that game is ridiculous.

Only my opinion

It is interesting that Leeds let him go but I have watched Ankergren on numerous occasions this season, and he has not filled me with confidence.

His taking of crosses is definitely suspect as indeed, I have to say, is his catching as in many instances he just seems to parry the ball and takes it at a second attempt. I don’t dispute for one moment that ( as one would expect of a GK ) he has made a number of vital stops but he has certainly also missed a few that I would have expected he would have taken.

The most worrying aspect for me is the time wasting dribbling thing which often ends in near disaster as he leaves himself either with precious little time to clear the ball ( clearances are not brilliant ) OR delivers (what would be in rugby parlance) a hospital pass where our defender is left to cope with both a ball coming slowly towards him AND an opposing attacker approaching at high speed.

That sort of thing will be taken apart in the Championship so we will need better and that is why we would be best served by signing a new No 1.

Didn't Gus say he would be getting in the attackers first as they tend to be hardest to sign? I imagine that in a few weeks we'll start hearing talk of various defenders being linked with boarding the Gus Bus

While we are currently linked with every available striker and midfielder does it worry anyone that we have not bought in a replacement keeper and centre half.

We need a 2nd choice keeper and while Greer and El Abd are fine there are question marks over Elphick and Dunk while one for the future IMO would benefit from a loan spell and regular first team football.

Do we need cover ion these positions?

Right off to a Beer Festival, I look forward to your replies in the morning.

Ankergren's weakness is undoubtedly crosses but the key is his defence's understanding of the situation and the comparison I would draw is with Kuipers. Michel destroyed the confidence and effectiveness of his defence who never knew whether he would come for a cross or not but always knew that he would blame them for any misunderstanding. Casper doesn't go near any cross outside the narrow confines of his six yard box and the line of his goalposts. His defence know this and know exactly what they are responsible for dealing with. Casper's "time-wasting/dribbling" is crucial to our game of drawing teams forward and committing them to leaving space that we can exploit. As long as he and his defence are comfortable and confident with ball at feet the possibility of error is not increased.

Brezovan comes for crosses which means that when he plays both he and the defence must adapt and that requires a much greater verbal dialogue and time to settle so if he comes in it will take a game or two at least to settle. Ditto Poke. However as long as Casper is fit and on top of his game neither can exppect to play more than a few games in the cups all season. With the best will in the world that is the same situation as with most clubs and if the judgement overall is that we are okay to go with what we have I'm not going to argue. If it comes to it we can get a loan keeper in at short notice so I'm not going to worry.

I am much more concerned with cover at centre back at least until el abd and Elphick are back. I'm sure Dunk has promise but it would be a big risk to go into the season with him as a starter and no cover. Like others I think he should be going out on loan when possible (when Adam or Tommy are fit) to get games and experience.
Greer may not be the fastest but his positional and organisational strengths outweigh that and I thiink he will continue to be massive for us. What we do need urgently is someone with experience at Championship level to start the season. They need to be fast and flexible and able to cover at full back if needed as the season progresses. And we will need to buy in my view because a suitable loanee is unlikely to be available for the big kick-off.

But Brez and Poke are both under contract so they're not going away. If Gus is happy with then, then they're fine by me.

Under your skin.
I know somebody who trains with the squad on a regualr basis, he claims that Poke is the best of our keepers in training. Just bottled his chance.
