It's a soakaway trench which is filled with clean stone and piped back to road gullies. The black material is terram which allows water to pass but not silt to return through and clog the stone up.

In other words if you get caught short halfway between the station and the stadium there is somewhere to take a leak.

now then - stalker alert............
i popped along to the ground this morning
saw some bloke who looked like Jack Straw..............
"Art vs Science" that is a very apt description of what i saw, JS - holding his trusty ladder with a larger gentleman on top (no affence, but age old pie question may have an answer) or more like art vs gravity/extruded aluminum ladder................

Really? Cool - I thought it would have been grown somewhere else and lifted in.....shows you how much its changed since I worked for a turf care company...
