I'm off on the night shift in a mo, and sad but true, Macca's greatest hits CD always gets much airplay at work and prob will tonite. Luckily 'The Frog Chorus' isn't on it!!

Yorkie, you are right, Lennon and Macca together were the best songwriting team of all time. But Lennon's solo work, although much of it too obscure for the mainstream audience, is streets ahead of McCartney's. (just my opinion, like)

Zeitgest - 'Lennon Legend' is good, but if you do like him, dig a bit deeper. Buy the albums 'Plastic Ono Band', 'Milk and Honey' and 'Imagine', you won't regret it.

The word 'Legend' was made for people like John Lennon. RIP.

Fully agree with JBL, yet again, and Yorkie, but please try McCartney albums, Band On The Run, Wings At The Speed Of Sound, Wings Over America, and lastly Flaming Pie.

They both needed each other to fully create that spark. Althogh a McCarney fan, quality sometimes was not always quality.

Agreed, but McCartney now tells us it was mostly his input and wants to change the credits to McCartney/Lennon.

Proof that he is a self important wanker as Lennon can hardly argue the toss can he

McCartney has no edge without Lennon's input. The exception being Band on the Run. Most of his solo stuff is bland and repetitive. Lennon always had an edge and was making some inspired stuff before he was murdered. IMO, if he was alive, he would still be inspiring people whereas McCartney has done nothing of consequence for 20 years.

I like them both, more or less equally. I think they aimed for different things in their solo music, and it's often unfair to compare them. McCartney is very much a writer of melody and arrangement, and never cares too much about lyrics. With Lennon it tended to be the other way round; his lyrics are wonderful, but the music is often quite similar and less melodic. Obviously there are individual songs where this is not the case. Of all his songs, I love the energy of “Instant Karma” the most.

The other difference is the amount of songs out there. McCartney has had twenty more years than Lennon now, and even when they were both alive, McCartney’s output was much greater than Lennon. McCartney’s quality control is much lower, and so there’s far more dross out there from him, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t many great songs too.

I really like about half of Paul’s last studio album: Driving Rain. “Lonely Road”, “From a Lover to a Friend” are wonderful songs, but they’re packaged with so many other less good songs that they’re ignored. Lennon, on the other hand, tends to be represented by his Collection or Greatest Hits these days. And every song on that is excellent, so people see him as superior. I still don’t think a comparison is fair, but if you have to compare them, I don’t see either of them as better than the other.

Apart from all his orchestral stuff.

Lennon can hardly argue but George (rip) or Ringo could have disputed it as they were there too.

I don't deny the genius of John but prefer Paul. (But then as JBL says the fact that I have fancied him for 40 years does get in the way a bit )

You're a bit naiive if you believe Macca actually said that. All he DID say was that he wanted it reversed on the songs he predominantly wrote. If you read his autobiography, he actually says it was more or less 50-50 and that the only song he had any qualms over who wrote what was the music to In My Life, which most people attribute to Lennon. Macca says otherwise. In the book he breaks down every beatles track and says who had what input on it, and apologises for any errors in his own minds eye.
