G S T Q for me.

Where is Jerusalem anyway? Is it somewhere near Cirencester?

We need to build it first:

I will not cease from Mental Fight,
Nor shall my Sword sleep in my hand:
Till we have built Jerusalem,
In England's green & pleasant Land

It's about revolutionary zeal. That'll do for me.

All the serious suggestions for a National Anthem have 'God' in them as a major player - I would be in favour of a brand new secular anthem, written specifically for the purpose, rather than a rehashed version of an existing song.

Hereditary entitlement eh, surely the worst kind of unattractive characteristic is when those who have it openly reject it, yet we know really they covet it.........

http://www.theguardian.com/politics...en-benn-tony-son-reclaimed-hereditary-peerage

Yet, people will still vote for these kind of shits..........

I think you're a little confused.

Tony Benn rejected it so he could be voted for. He certainly didn't covet the honour, because he ditched it.

His son seems to be reclaiming it so he might be able to sit in the Lords and represent labour, and so he would not need to be voted for.

Who are you trying to get at? - genuine question

Despise GSTQ. An absolute Dirge. Made even worse by the ****ing England band playing it incessantly. I want to sing about my country, not the ****ing royal family.

Well the other UK countries have their own anthems, GSTQ is the British anthem, the Queen is head of the UK, not just England. So what happens when we compete in the Commonwealth Games, we HAVE to have our OWN anthem. The cricket team and hockey team use Jerusalem, so it should be England's national anthem.
Lest we forget when Britain are competing in the Olympics as GB, then GSTQ is used because it IS the British anthem.
We should also play in Red/white or White/red...whats all this blue shorts about.
I remember England v Swiss at Wembley a few years ago, the whole ground decked out in red and white COSG flags etc, and the Swiss with their red and white flags....we were the HOME team, yet the Swiss played in their red and white kit.
Play in the colour or colours of our flag.......imo :)

She is also the Head of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Jamaica, Barbados, The Bahamas, Grenada, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Belize, Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis

Play in the colour or colours of our flag.......imo :)

Or the colours of the principal ruling house, like the Dutch. Many, if not most, countries don't play in the colours of their national flag.

I realise that the Queen is also head of the other countries you mentioned, the Commonwealth, but thanks for the reminder.
I thought we were talking about English anthem in relation to the UK, which by the way the other UK countries play in the colours of their flag, as do many other countries.
As for the Dutch, do you see their supporters turn up with in the colours of their flag....no because they know they always play in orange, and swop if clashing to white shirts with orange shorts.
Our fans turn up with the COSG flags, red and white.....tonight it was all white......no blue thankfully.
Home games should be red and white imo or at least one of those colours.
Do Brighton not play in their home kit when at home.........

What's confusing, Benn's son covets the peerage his multi millionaire socialist old man rejected so he can sit in an unelected chamber on behalf of a supposed socialist party. A party that is ideologically opposed to hereditary entitlement........if they had any integrity and honour they would reject this move by Benn but they haven't.

But then it's not like this hypocrisy is unique to the political Benn dynasty..........

Still what can you expect from a man that plays croquet.........

Politics aside, GSTQ IS a dirge. Even patriotic royalists say so.

Something with a bit of umph is what we need.

I'd like to see the red become our home kit too. It's pretty iconic and as you say, matches the flag.

Who is the leader and figurehead of the nation.

The British nation, not just the English nation. We (England) need our own song the equivalent of Flower of Scotland or Gchllytrfll Fllyddryl (the Welsh one, might have missed out the odd consonant in my spelling).

I don't think the Queen is too pleased when she hears her song roundly booed in parts of her realm by people who are supposed to be her subjects. I believe she has (informally) mentioned this in the past.

EDIT: And Land of Hope And Glory is also British rather than English. Like it or not Jerusalem is the best 'pure' English one we have, although I accept all the criticism of it. Maybe Gary Barlow could write us one?
