So do Bent and Defoe to international defences. And so do a load of other 16, 17, 18yr olds but you wouldn't take them would you. Honestly tell me, apart from massively hyped what has Walcott got that makes him so different to anyone else in his age category that warrants a place in the England squad?

So you expect a talented 17 yr old to do this who you have never seen play Premiership football but not 2 talented players who have scored goals in the prem, one who has been particularly prolific this year? Or put it a different way what have you seen in Walcott that suggests he is a better bet than Bent or Defoe? And please don't say he is a gamble.

Bent is another decent club player, he is not of international standard, so why take a player that the coaches do not rate?

Defoe, well he has been poor this season.

With Walcott, its not so much a gamble. With a gamble, you at least have an idea of the odds. You have some form to study to be able to project a likely outcome. Taking Walcott basically amounts to a blind punt though. A "fingers crossed" jobbie.

I'd really expect more than that from an International manager.

That still hasn't answered what it is about Walcott that makes him a better option than them. And if you say his pace and the unknown well then why not take Scott Sinclair at Chelsea, amzingly quick and even more unknown.

I pressume a lot of it comes from the fact he will take people on and his movement is good.

Bent stays right up on the shoulder of the defender and looks to run on to the ball. That is fine, but he does not seem to move accross the line well.

Defoe has been disapointing this season and from what I have seen of him playing for England, is that until he learns to look up and have awarness of his team mates, he is always going to be struggling to get a game.

Call Walcott a gamble, blind punt, whatever you like, there is nothing better out there. Yes, players do need to play a few international games before you can fairly judge them but in this particular case we know who will play up front. What we are looking for is a player who can make an impact in desperate circumstances, and so the judgement is made that if someone can't make an impact in a whole game or a couple of games then he wont make an impact when he's only got 15 minutes.

This boy is ( supposedly ) faster than Henry and can clearly play. Wenger would have been consulted and has spoken favourably. In my book that doesn't make him like a load of other 16, 17 or 18 year olds.

If that was the case Grimandi should have played for Spain.

I think you are spot on with the fact that there is nothing better there.

I know people will say that Bent has only had about 70 minutes on the pitch for England, but he has been in every squad this season so they will have had a good look at him and there are obviously big reservations.

To be fair Wenger had just spunked a large wedge of cash on the kid, he isnt really going to turn around and say on second thoughts he is a bit shit.

As opposed to the simpler and slightly less controversial 'no, I don't think he is ready for such a test'.

Your world is a dramatic one isn't it.

i dont see the point in taking Carrick and Hargreaves only to play carragher in the midfield however he is a good player with "big game," experience. IMHO Sven should have tried carragher in there before he picked the squad then Hargreaves or Carrick could have been ommitted in favour of another striker.

Good old Sven ...

"I could play the best holding midfielder in England there, or I could go for someone who does the job regularly for Bayern Munich, or I could put a centre-back who's never played there before in ... easy choice, then."

I really do look forward to him leaving.

The Sven loyalists on NSC are a quiet bunch these days. Is Bucky backing his fella's "bold" use of a player picked out of position or is only Mark McGhee not allowed to do this? :smokin:

We're not allowed to slag off McGhee though when he plays players out of position, oh no

No, that never happens on here, does it?

This is England we are talking about, so go away, you have made it clear you have no time for England.

I do not think Carragher is the answer there, but like Mayo at the Albion he started out as a midfielder.
