Excuse my ignorance, but now that Jake is 17 would I be right in thinking that any club could, in fact, offer him a contract and that he has no commitment, per se, to the Albion?

Jake started a 3-year scholarship at the beginning of July this year. According to the rules, this means no other club should approach him until at least the summer of 2006. However, every other club playing by the rules seema about as likely as Elvis turning up at Tesco.

17 is the earliest we can offer Jake a professional contract (ie, more than c£2-£6k a year from a scholarship) and 3 years is the maximum length of pro contract any club can offer to a 17-year-old. The contract can be extended at 18.

Offering Jake a pro contract now strengthens our position in 2 ways if another club comes in: 1) It shows any tribunal how highly we value the player, and 2) It shows the player how highly we value him, making him less likely to be tempted by Villa or whoever else muscles in.

Not forgetting that he deserves to be paid by our club. Over to you, Mr Chairman.

Jake's gotta be taken out of the youth team and given some more time on the bench/pitch for the first team against teams in this division, otherwise he's not going to get the experience he needs for when he's the starting forward in the first match at Falmer

Shaun Wilkinson was today.

Jake is being brought along at a steady rate. He cannot be expected to be the cure for everything - that's just not fair on him.

I'm sure he will continue to feature - just not every week - bvut ultimately that will be down to the new gaffer.
