"FA defends secret bans on players failing tests for recreational drugs"

http://m.guardian.co.uk/sport/2011/sep/12/fa-drugs-tests-garry-oconnor?cat=sport&type=article

There remains absolutely no grounds to suggest Wilshere is involved in anything like it. It's massively out of order to suggest there is something in this without having anything to back it up. Support the accusation, or give it a rest. I'm sick of the constant accusations of sportsmen for no reason.

I'm not suggesting, I'm wondering.

Surely a drug related ban would have been set in stone in terms of the time period though? Arsenal have been putting back Wilshere's return all year.

Naturally, so am I. I didn't know about the O'Connor situation, so that article you posted was an interesting read but we know Wilshere has been physically injured, the suggestion that he's some kind of drug addict is just out of order until there's some kind of concrete proof. It's not impossible, I just don't like the accusation that he's on drugs with nothing to back it up.

As I understand it upon completion of the ban the player has to sign up to a probationary period where he will be the subject of random testing and other monitoring. If the player is not in a position to do this for whatever reason (ie the drug taking is a bit more serious than a few cheeky toots in a club) then I guess he doesn't train or play until he does sign up.

Once a disciplinary decision has been made, in addition to any sanctions imposed, a player may be sent to any one of a number of FA-approved specialists in drug misuse and addiction to determine whether a course of rehabilitation is appropriate. If so, the player may be required to undergo a rehabilitation programme as part of the conditions of their return to/continued participation in football. Should the player fail to complete the programme to the satisfaction of The Football Association, the sanction imposed may be reviewed and possibly extended.

See post above which is from the FA website.

If it is a kosher injury, it makes me think we are lucky to get Tommy Elphick back after 'just' a season out. It could have easily gone pear-shaped also, what with ankles being quite complicated joints

The club will never tell the truth about this though. We will never find out unless we get some heroin-side information.

Ramsey should be captaining the Olympic side in my opinion.

I would have only picked 1 over age player and that would have been Beckham.
