Max Bygraves.

Incidentally there was some classical music that started before Watch With Mother in the early 60s that had some mental bit to it that had me and my middle brother bouncing around the room. Can anyone remember what that was, and ideally post a link?

That had the old spin tingling, they did use two theme tunes however. I can't find the original for this, only a Max Bygraves one but the lyrics were;

Say what you will,
The countryside is still
The only place where I could settle down
Troubles there are so much rarer
Out of town

Spring starts to spring
The cuckoo starts to sing
A song to take the edge off winter's frown
And spring cleaning has a meaning
Out of town

Up there the sun is a big yellow duster
Polishing the blue, blue sky
With white fluffy clouds in a cluster
Hanging on a breeze to dry

Trees everywhere
With blossoms in their hair
And Mother Nature wears her newest gown
What I'd give once more to live
Right out of town.

This is the Max Bygraves theme tune...although I think this is a slightly more upbeat version than the one they used for the tv show..

God that really is a nostalgafest. Seriously was Southern the only network to show 'out of town'? Watching him in his shed, just having got back from tickling a trout or whatever was as much part of my childhood as trying to get into one of the Lily sisters pants.

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
I'm sure it used to be on immediately before or after (forget which) The Big Match on Sundays on LWT.

My grandad appeared on Out of Town once as he used to make walking sticks as a hobby.

As a young kid it was so exciting to see one of your relatives on the telly - these days you would just get a very big thread on NSC when that happened:lol:

Don't forget the uniquely funny (by US comedy standards) Hogan's Heroes.

Tremendous programme, not forgetting The Champions with Miss Alexandra Bastedo (ex-B&H High School) was on around lunchtime on Sundays then too.

And then BBC1 around 5pm on Sunday for a classic novel, David Copperfield or Anne of Green Gables or similar. Absolute quality viewing.

Much missed :)
