From back of today's Argus, McGhee has challenged big Chris to earn a longer contract by proving he can be a first division striker. He said "if we are in the second division, then I have absolutely no doubts, if we are in the first division, I want to see what happens between now and the end of the season"

"if we end up in the first division, I want to make sure it is with a team that is not going to be found out again. We have to have a team that is good enought to keep us there.

in order to be convinced about Chirs and his credentials for that, I need to see a bit more"

:clap2: :clap2: see, McGhee did learn something from playing under Alex Ferguson. What better motivation does Iwelumo need and whose gonna benefit if he does prove he's up to it? Well thought out mind games from McGhee imo

Like it McGhee, hes proving himself more and more in my eyes as a canny and potentially excellent manager for us

Surely McGhee should be having that conversation with the likes of Oatway, Watson, Carpenter, Hart and Jones!!

Or perhaps he has already made up his mind on them and they are simply not good enough for div 1

I thought Carpenter was one of our better players in division one, looked comfortable at that level. Surely a harsh comment.

Expect big Chris to knock Mcphee out of the second top scorer this season spot then

If you think Carpenter is on a par with Watson or Oatway can I buy you a white stick?

Carpenter is player of the season! Harty was great in 2001/02, but no longer. Oatway is a good squad player for upper Div 2. Watson got found out big time in Div 1, and has never been the same since.

McGhee makes a fair point and I reckon he is probably examining the performance of all the team.

I am not saying that Carpenter is poor, what I am saying is that McGhee cant just single out Iwelumo to prove himself for a new contract, there are other players who need to do the same.
Carpenter has played very well this season, but does Mcghee think he has done enough to earn himself a place in the team next year if we go up!
Surely McGhee should be telling the whole squad, or as I said has he made up his mind that they are not good enough or indeed good enough.

Carpenter in my opinion was our MOST CONSISTENT player LAST season in DIVISION ONE. Even when we were losing, he looked comfortable at that level.

Carpenter has a first division pedigree.

So of those in our main team, who do we think is worthy of playing for us in Div 1 (assuming we get there this season)?

Here are my thoughts:

Kuipers - Yes
Roberts - Yes
Jones - No
Harding - Yes
Hinshelwood - Yes
El-Abd - Yes
Watson - No
Mayo - No
Blackwell - Maybe - depends on fitness
Rodger - Maybe - depends on fitness
Oatway - No
Cullip - Yes
Carpenter - Yes
Virgo - Yes
Butters - Yes
Hammond - Maybe
Reid - Yes
Hart - Sadly, no
Jones - Sadly, no
Piercy - No - too injury prone
Lee - No
McPhee - Maybe
Beck - Maybe
Knight - Yes
Iwelumo - Yes
Robinson - Yes

No doubt I've forgotten someone but my memory is not what it used to be.

I wouldn't discount Kerry Mayo quite so quickly, he was excellent in div 1 for us last time around. Also, as many have stated Butters may get found out by the pace of the first division. Nevertheless considering his form this season he deserves another go I feel.

Not convinced about Rodger or Blackwell. Too injury prone. We can't afford that again.

Yeah, isnt that how we got a hold of them both in the first place- their own clubs decided they could not be relied upon to stay fit long enough to have a big impact? Rodger in particular did well in the latter half of Div1 season, but now its reverted to type hasnt it? The money spent on their wages we cant afford to just throw away..

Interesting McGhee said that publicly as well, he does quite like using the press
