It takes a big man to admit he's wrong

FFS they were not 4 sitters, they were all on target and the keeper made two decent saves and the post made another. Did you wacth Zamora when he 1st went to Fulham? He was missing and I mean missing the goal completely when he missed so many "sitters" and look how he turned it around. Give Barnes a chance, I sometimes think some Albion fans deserve the shit strikers we so often have as they are so clueless as to what makes a good striker and unwilling to give players time to settle in.

This.

I'm probably alone on this, but when a striker is one-on-one with the keeper, I expect him to score even at this level.

so by that reckoning you'd say EVERY one-on-one in the Premiership is scored?! I dont think so

If it wasn't for Sandaza, I'd have come home yesterday pretty pissed off with Barnes for wasting glorious chances that someone with the basic ability to shoot could have scored.

He might turn out to be a good signing, and time will tell, but he needs to sort his finishing out before anyone should start raving about him.

so, he needs 6 months or a season to prove himself, but needs no such time to be dismissed as no good. what a positive approach to life. i wonder what happened to you to make you have such a bitter view of the world? presumably from your professed finishing skills, it's not being chosen for a life as a professional footballer.

Anyone who doesnt think we have landed a bargain in Barnes should get himself down to Specsavers now. Not only was his positional play brilliant yesterday, but also he held the ball up well and showed a rare enthusiasm.

Was delighted when we signed Barnes and am delighted with him now. Bollox to all the "if he hadn't have scored yesterday we would have lost and I would have been pissed off", well piss off - he did score and we won. Job done.

Barnes did miss four sitters yesterday, had he not scored his goal would you really be making this thread?

As long as he learns to become more clinical, we should have a quality striker on our books.

Your post proves my point entirely. I suspect that you've never played football outside of a playground. The fact is that Barnes didn't have a lot of luck but he caused their defence all manner of problems. For a 20 year old getting sod all protection from a utterly cretinous referee I think he was outstanding and I'm not alone in rating him as man of the match.

Show me a striker who scores with every chance and I'll show you a myth.

At the game yesterday I was disappointed with Barnes as his finishing seemed very poor - having watched the Football League Show, I was wrong at least for the shot that hit the post that they showed - that was a very good effort indeed.

Barnes missed some good chances yesterday, but he didn't hide, he still went looking for the next chance. He was also willing to get into a physical confrontation with the big defender. I think he is very competitive and plays for the team, it's early days but he looks OK to me.

Barnes had about seven good chances yeaterday and scored one. That is the fact of the matter, which ever way you look at it. He has three goals so far but should at least have double that amount and I cant see how anyone can argue this fact. On the plus side, yes he gets himself in good positons but the fact of the matter is his end product is not as good as it should be. Sometimes you only get a few chances in a game and taking them can be the difference between success and faliure.

I work up this morning very happy that we are top of the league as we are playing with both skill and confidence. The I thought about the handful of negative people who will criticise anything and then I got angry. Needless to say whist TCB has kept his head down WW is back to his good old, ill informed and frankly pointless opinions. I don't like people bouncing threads but I am sure I will bounce this thread in January just to see if you will admit you are wrong, something that most people think you are. There no need to call you names as we know what you are anyway.

I have no doubt that players read this and I certainly don't want to see the current mood influenced in any way but the crap said by idiots.

I do think it was a good performance though, but the ability to convert these kind of chances is what makes a quality striker.

This thread would not exist if Barnes hadn't scored/ we lost - so my criticism is more of this constant bandwagon hopping rather than Barnes.

He's 20 so has plenty of time to improve this aspect of his game, and if he does he will be a quality player - if not, he will go in the same direction as Davies.

I don't know if you were watching the Albion, when Peter Ward was playing, but he wasted/missed far , far more chances than he actually scored.

However, the important part of Peter wards career, was the number of times he put himself in scoring positions. A natural forward/goalscorer.

Murray played well yesterday, but how many times did he get himself into a scoring position....? We had two front runners, Oldham had two centre-halves. The two centre-halves didn't spend the whole game just marking Murray.

Time wil tell, but Barnes, at just 20, is looking a very, very good prospect.

Exactly Mr. Express. We won, Barnes scored and we're top of the league. Is there really a point in criticising players who "should have" scored more? Christ almighty.

What was interesting was that Murray and Barnes had switched roles, and Murray did very well indeed as provider. That is why Barnes had so many chances. I think it looked very promising indeed - need confidence to get teh finishing sorted and it could go well.

Yes he probably should have done better with the chances before his goal, something I'm sure he would agree with, but to say they were sitters if plain crap. Their keeper was pretty much on fire yesterday. And for anyone to say on here that they could have done better with the chances is laughable

Quite right. I'm afraid İbrahim Tatlıses seems to make these slightly ignorant comments pretty regularly. Describing the chances (Barnes made himself in most cases) yesterday as sitters is just thinking in cliches. Thankfully most people on here realise that he had a storming game yesterday.

The one-on-one he would have hoped to score, but the keeper made a good save. It happens. Great run by Barnes.

The one that hit the post was a superb shot across the keeper (with his wrong foot??) which goalie just got finger tips to.

One chance in the first half where the ball was played behind him, so hardly a sitter.

Hit the bar in the second half.

You just can't take a trite and patronising comment like "missing sitters" seriously. Superb game - great shame he didn't get a bit of luck in front of goal and take the ball home.

Top post, bang on the mark. How many goals has Murray scored this season? Yet you never see Glenn getting slagged off.

Withdean Wanderer is spot on, if we had lost two points many more posts would have been critical of his scoring attempts, to be a successful striker you have to find the net with no more than a couple of good chances. If we had signed another goalscorer we could get by with Barnes but as the main hope we must aim higher.
I would keep him in the squad as a possibility for the future but if we are going for promotion in time for Falmer we must get a matchwinner on loan then sign him in January.

FFS. "if we had lost two points". Seriously why the hell do you say that? We won and Barnes scored. Sake, we are top of the league but we have to find reasons for why we 'may have lost' because a player may not have scored.
