Could be wrong but I very much doubt that's either Brighton or Hove tbh. Don't recognise any of the buildings in it and those streetlight is different.

I'm pretty certain that first image is NOT Old Steine.

I've just had a look on another Brighton image archive, and the original buildings are the ones still standing. In other words, it's not as though those buildings in your picture have since gone and been replaced by anything else.

It's that statue on the right that has me scratching my head. Again, can't see any reference to it anywhere. Will keep digging later.

Yes. I thought so.

So that is not Old Steine in the first picture, is it?

I don't think so. Some of the buildings architecture is similar but that could be said of a lot places. The lamppost in the foreground doesn't look like a Brighton lamp, but the main thing that makes me think it isn't the Old Steine is the fountain, which I've never seen any pictures of before. Either the fountain is long gone and there's not much photographic evidence of it, or the picture isn't the Old Steine.

I thought it might be a view from the South West of the Old Steine looking towards the road where the 3 in 10 bar is but this photo kind of disproves that. Looks like the fountain has always been a 2 tier affair therefore not a photo of the Old Steine there

First image is defo the Old Steine. The six buildings to the right of the picture have been demolished though. It's the view from the Steine, looking towards the block between Edward St and St James' St.

Thanks for all the help.

Insider. The building on the far left of the original photo definately looks like The Royal Albion. Amazing bit of Brighton history. Cheers.

I like the traffic sign "Keep to the Left" on the lamp-post.

They should put that up again when the Labour Party has another conference in Brighton....:lolol:
