Yep, you can actually.

I was about to get into a heated name calling debate but have to hold my hand up and say, having checked the laws of the game, you can score direct from a goal kick.

Edit: Thought I wasn't going mad. Seems the rule change was in 1997. Can't think why they would change it from an indirect free kick to a direct one.

The BBC text commentary has it down as an assist by Erik Pieters. Since when has a back pass to your own goalkeeper been an "assist"?

Not only that but it said 'from more than 35 yards' as well as 'assist by Erik Pieters' so it sounded like it was in Soton's half, I thought Begovic had gone mad and run straight down the pitch from the kick-off and scored a screamer.
