Is there such a thing as a creative midfielder?

Yes, and I agree with those that say Joe Cole is one.

We will wait and see. I never really thought of Joe Cole really in the same class as Damien Duff.

Jermaine Defoe has shown some improvement in technique, scoring with his swinger left foot. I was a bit surprised about this.

Our very own Graham Kavanagh is a prime example of a creative midfielder.

With the likes of Richard Langley and John 'The Messiah' Robinson providing some much-needed width, and Willie Boland doing much of the donkey work in the middle of the park, Graham Kavanagh is giving First Division defences absolute nightmares.

Jimmy Bullard at Wigan is another brilliantly creative midfielder at First Division level. They bought him from Peterborough for around £250,000 last year. From what I've seen of him, that was one of the bargains of the decade.

It may be that we can all agree to dislike the long ball game where the midfield is missed out.

The best opposing midfielders I have seen at the Goldstone have been Ray Kennedy (Liverpool) and Trevor Brooking (West Ham).

Both the players were not so much creative as high energy players covering large areas of the pitch.

Bryan Robson was the same sort of player although I never saw him play at the Goldstone (at least I can't remember: did he?).

Pele and Zidane are in a class all of their own; mostly technique was/is just so good it seemed almost automatic.

We need a midfield "dynamo"!

If I had a choice of one player in the world in my team, I would take Patrick Viera. He doesn't stop running, doesn't give the ball away & sets up wave after wave of attack. He's not seen as a creative midfielder, but I think he is.

Personally I prefer 3-5-2 with two ball-winning central midfielders & someone in "the hole". Unfortunately we don't have anyone who can play in the hole yet

I agree about Patrick Viera, but I think that of all the tactical systems 3-5-2 (wing-back system)is the most ludicrous of the lot.

4-4-2 is the best system, it makes best use of players covering the pitch, but tends to be a bit rigid, and if two 4-4-2 teams play against each other they tend to get stuck in a boring stalemate.

With Patrick Viera, he is worth two players, and I daresay a 4-3-3 would work for most games.

I never understood why the team should have two wingers operating at the same time. (Two wingers can be on the pitch in one side, but one must fulfill another role when one player is out wide.) It can only be passed out to one wing at a time.

If the other team crowds the midfield with five players, I would tend to keep them on their toes with a long ball up to the front to the two or three strikers. It is a bit of a problem the other side crowding their midfield, but it is more of a defensive measure when the away team wants to stifle the opposition from playing. Expected of the bottom teams, which is why they are sometimes a bit difficult to break down until the first goal goes in.

Yes.
there names are James Harper, Scott Murray, Steve Sidwell and Andy Hughes
They create opportunities, get the ball into the important areas, and win games by bossing the midfield, and making chances.
creativity is the sole job of a midfielder.
steve who?
