my television has just been given a drink by my 5 year old neice and has died (rip big man you served me well) i have been considering upgrading for a while now anyway but do you think the insurance company will let me add the extra to the cost of the replacement tv to get me a 42 inch hd thingy

They may well just send you a cheque for the value (less your excess) in which case you could do whatever you wished with the money.

Alternatively they may say you have £X to spend at their nominated retailer in which case you'll be able to add on whatever you wish when you get in contact for a replacement.

Should be able to, although they may frown on it if you mention you've been thinking about upgrading ("accidental spillages" and all that...).

Probably worth just enquiring how they work, and taking it from there. When my HDD in my PC blew up (damn thunderstorms!!) they sent a cheque for about £60. That went nicely towards the 250Gb HDD I was eyeing up previously. Gutted I lost all my pictures though (oh, and the porn).

Commiserations on the untimely death of your neice , the insurance company will firstly look through all the exclusions on your policy , take off the excess and wear & tear then may decide to send a cheque. Your premium will go up so that they will recover over a period of time what they are paying out
