me and the missus are going away for the summer and want to go somewhere treble good, we're both pretty keen on india, but a slight problem is that this is during the indian monsoon season

has anyone been to india during this time? if so, how bad is it, and will it ruin our time there?

we're generally thinking of the south of india, and possibly sri lanka, and we'll probably go in late july

Worthing
Long time ago, but I arrived in Delhi at the end of the monsoon in 1989.

It was pretty rank, to be honest.

We travelled up to the Himalayas, and there were land-slides all over the place. All pretty scary.

Not sure what it's like in the south, but I'd be prepared for some pretty indecent smells around the place if I were you - rotting vegetable type smells - I found myself retching in the street a few times and was glad of the respite afforded by the 5 star hotel! Once the monsoon was over, it was fantastic, though, and definitely recommended.

I think the timing of the monsoon differs in the various parts of India as it travells across, and I think we went at the end of August and stayed for the whole of September.

I was in India in 2006 from the beginning of September to Christmas. September is the tail end of the monsoon season, and when it rains it CHUCKS it down, more than you will ever see in your life.

I stayed in Bangalore, and the rain caused flooding, and the roadside mud, just got everwhere, and the traffic got twice as bad (and traffic is MENTAL to start with)

When you get passed the rainy season, it is a brilliant place to go, and I recommend getting yourself to
Bangalore for a vibrant city with great shopping
Hampi for maybe the best cultural experience you will get
Kerela, the best part of India by a mile, amazing backwaters and beaches or
Chennai for more good beaches and the crocodile rivers!!

Been to Mumbai in September/October & the Monsoon was just tailing off, weather was overcast pretty much the whole time. Goa in late October/early November was fine last year, the odd cloudy day. When researching my trip, June/July/August were NOT recommended, though.

Keep well away from rainy season. I have been to Sri Lanka about 15yrs ago and it was REALLY nice, but seem to remember goin September time. A good travel agent will advise of seasons etc.
