I get this strange feeling sometimes that inanimate objects are "alive" in some way, and want to be treated nicely, so I try to be nice to them. I find this most potent with my car. When driving home from work the other day prior to having a few days off, I told it that "at least you'll have a break from this bloody journey for a few days anyway". I also advise my car of any upcoming services and/or MOT's, and thank it when it passes without too much expense, sometimes with an additional little pat on the steering wheel.

I think it's only the car that I actually speak to, but I get this feeling with other stuff as well. I took our old patio set (table and chairs) to the dump last week, and as I cast it into the giant skip, I couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt as it lay there forlornly in the rain amongst the rubbish. I had to stuff my fist into my mouth to stifle a sob as I turned my back on it and walked away when that big rolling crusher thing started to do its work on it.

I think its called "animism" - the belief that inanimate objects also have souls and feelings. Does anyone else experience anything similar, maybe in a milder form ? Or am I deeply disturbed in some way ?

My snowboards (I have two of them) are my "Babys", I always talk to them whilst on the mountain..."go on....catch that edge" and "ouch....sorry....did'nt see that rock!"

In the summer its "only a few months my precious....then you'll feel the snow again!"

I sometimes dust them down and service them in the summer too just so they feel wanted.

There's a bit of a clue in the word INANIMATE :jester:
Yes yes yes, I KNOW its irrational, stupid, mawkish and senseless. But Its just a vague feeling that creeps around my brain sometimes.

Seen the film...maybe it is something like that.
Thinking about it, when you're a kid there's always books and stories with inanimate objects having faces talking to you. Cars, telephones, clocks...Disney is a prime offender, with candlesticks, brooms, cutlery, all appearing to have lives and feelings. Maybe it all leads back to Fantasia. Its no wonder I still think these things have real LIVES. Stuff like Toy Story just reaffirms the idea of pieces of plastic being alive.

I might need help.

I had my bike nicked a couple of years ago. I was absolutely gutted, it was my longest relationship, bore the marks of a well-lived life, each one a memory, and I sometimes find myself imagining it lying rusting in some hedgrow which makes me so sad. I know it's just waiting for me to find it and give it a good servicing...

I'd go along with this. I tend to talk to trains.

"you useless piece of shit...why are you broken again" "Why won't the doors open" etc!
