Just seen on Ceefax the very sad news that a 20-year-old student from the University of Sussex has died from suspected meningitis. Another student at the same uni has been taken to hospital with symptoms of the disease.

Sorry, don't wish to scare-monger in any way at all, but my daughter contracted meningitis when she was nine months old and my son's best friend died of it, aged fourteen, a few years ago. It's a bastard of a disease.

Symptoms include severe headache, stiff neck and vomiting. Please don't take any chances with this. If you or anyone you know shows any of these symptoms get in touch with a doctor straight away.

Thanks for posting this, Tom. It is terrible news to lose someone so young. My thoughts are with her family. You are right to warn people - the symptoms differ slightly in adults than in babies and children. The symptoms are far more difficult to diagnose in adults.

A 20-year-old student from the University of Sussex has died from suspected meningitis.

The woman was admitted to St Helier Hospital, Carshalton, Surrey on Friday morning - she died late on Saturday evening.

Professor Alasdair Smith, vice-chancellor of the university said: "We are greatly saddened by the loss and offer our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.

"One has to be concerned about a situation in which a young person has died.

"The university is taking very careful advice from the Health Protection Agency and we are encouraging our students to be very vigilant about the risks although we are advised the risks of a further case are reasonably small."

This is shit.

The girl was perfectly fine on Wednesday because she was at the Honey Club with us.

Was she anyone I knew?

I've been vaccinated against it but isn't it right they can't immune you from the lethal brain version of the disease?

There are various strains of meningitus, bacterial and viral.

You cannot be vaccinated against them all but it is still very rare. The best way if you get any of the symptons is to get medical help asap because the sooner it is treated the more chance you have of survival. A colleague of mine survived the adult meningitus.

Be aware but don't get neurotic about if you have young children. I'm afraid that at times I did. Most GPs are supportive thankfully.

It's one of the scariest things around - I knew someone at Pomey Uni who went to bed one night feeling a bit crappy and never woke up. It can be as quick as that. It scared me witless.

I agree.

My daughter was very ill when she was 8 years old. She had a high temperature, didn't like me switching on the bedroom light and complained of pains in her head and neck.

I called the doctor out at 9pm and he was very thorough when examining her. Fortunately, it was a bad dose of flu.

He said that he didn't mind being called out because it was better to be safe than sorry and that I had done the right thing.

I lost a cousin from it. She was only 25. Too many doctors dismiss the symptoms too easily as other ailments.

It can be all or just one of the symptoms above plus spots may appear that don't go away when you run a glass over them.

My son nearly died of pneumococcal meningitis five days before his first birthday. We went to the out of hours GP on the Saturday and was told to give him a cold bath to bring his temperature down and that it was just a temperature. He was worse on the Sunday and we went back to another out of hours GP after a lot of debating about wasting GP's time. The GP sent us straight to the local hospital where they took some spinal fluid and diagnosed Pneumococcal meningitis. He was in the High Dependency Unit for 5 days and in hospital for three weeks. This strain in meningitis has no rash. Unfortunately most GPs I come across are pretty useless. In my view the best thing to do if you're really worried is to take the kid to A&E.

A friend of mine is a music teacher who lives in Uckfield. She contracted the bacterial strain two weeks before Christmas. Fine on one day, confirmed meningitis the next, septisemia (sp?) then next and pneumonia then next. Her body & the hospital battled the illness and she eventually pulled through. She was allowed out of hospital yesterday for an afternoon and it was all she could do to walk with the aid of a stick. She has lost a third of her bodyweight and faces up to month further in hospital before she will be released.

This really is a bastard of an illness.

I also had this.

Another symptom by the way is blotchy rashes over the body.
