so are we moaning that were doing the decent thing by helping a lady deliver her babys in a safe clean environment, were all the kids will have a great survival rate, or we let her have them in some third world country were she can catch all sorts of illnesses and pass away.

I think its a good thing we are doing.

the causes of migration are not really up for debate. few people up sticks unless they need to. what we see as pretty basic living is very very attractive to the vast majority of the world. if these places have a higher standard of living or indeed any then we would not see this mass movement of people. if you are sitting in a lagos slum and uncle adebayo is western unioning money back has a nice flat and a car and can get you over then why the f*** arent you going to do that. the whole world is on the move now we will look at back at this current period as quaint.

i am just asking people to accept that a lot of this is common knowledge and far more sophisticated than the systems trying to regulate it, and the 'well its alright by me' attitude penalises people at the sharp end. add the often implied thatcher generation snobbery (often from people who genuinely believe themselves to be liberal and compassionate) that birtish people who are struggling somehow deserve to be at the sharp end of this and that is my problem with this whole thing. its sad and makes me worry about britain when even the people who think they have it totally right dont really give a shit about people unless its the ones the live aid generation have been programmed to.

like i say, put 40 000 west africans in the city of brighton and hove tomorrow and lets have this debate again in a year.

Surely the causes of migration are the absolute key issue here. As you have said yourself most people migrate because they have to. So it stands to reason that if we can assist with the problems in poor countries they will not be migrating to other countries to make a better life. That is why I feel that getting in a tiz about these kinds of stories is just the tip of the iceberg (a drop in the ocean) and not really dealing or discussing the root of the problem. i.e. what is happening in these countries making people want to leave?, what is our involvement in those happenings? and most importantly of all what can we do to help?

But you are ignoring the fact that the story would never have been published in The Sun in the first place, so this discussion would not have taken place.

I haven't commented on the papers coverage, purely on the OP thread.

Most people through their own experiences accept there are immigration issues, we encounter it daily.

It isn't always negative, it isn't a hatred of all things foreign and darked skinned, that's such a tiresome view.

Its a realisation that there are consequences and some of them effect those most vulnerable within our own society.

is this all leading to buying bananas of a nice old man in a straw hat?

yes stop ripping the guts out of these places and it would solve a lot of problems i agree. also good management. perhaps we lowered the flag a little to early. you could argue scuttling off with our tail between our legs because we were skint after fighting fascism crossing our fingers didnt do anyone any favours either. not a fashionable viewpoint or one thats likely to be discussed sensibly in modern britain but one that deserves further examination perhaps.

Sorry, but in your post I may have missed something. In your first paragraph you quite clearly state:

"Having spent more than three years in Nigeria and being a fully paid up member of the UK Border Agency, I feel I'm qualified to comment on this one"

and then this little peach to round off

"And the answer is? Well, I don't know. Any suggestions?"

Dare I say get up off your backsides and do your job properly for which we pay you ?

So in this same statement you proclaim to be qualified to offer your opinion but offer no answers, seeking ours to attack Good try me old left wing pal but your as much a Border Agency Officer as I was as an attendee at The Prince of Monaco's wedding. Go back to the drawing board mate and consider what you've just written!!

She should not have been allowed to travel in the first place and that is the point that is being made. The debate now is now that she is here she has appointed a specialist immigration lawyer (at "OUR") taxpayers expense, a certain Mr Dado. The firm is based in Harrow, but only offers one contact name as an adviser on their correspondence, anything to hide well who knows. I've done my research and know this firm inside out.

As she is now here, then yes lets help her, but come the time when its ready, then its time to go home. She didnt go through the proper immigration channels and has shown herself and more importantly her husband who fled back to Nigeria until things calm down as crooked and trying to play our system !!

I could get all defensive here but there's really no point. You've pretty much nailed it. I joined a certain job but that job no longer exists, having been pulled apart by legislation from successive governments. We try our best but our best isn't nearly good enough.

Apologies.
