What's with Eminem and the other rappers constantly grabbing their crotches when singing?

I saw Eminem and D-12 on the MTV movie awards and every few seconds whilst sionging one of them would grab their crotches as if to adjust themselves.

Could i request that no one wants to "bust a cap in my motherfxxking ass" for such ignorance of what's cool in the 'hood'.

he was totally made by dr dre, and for a fair while rode off the back of dre's success.
no idea why he grabs his genitals, probably checking they're still there.
50 cent however, gains bonus respect by actually growing up in "the hood" (unlike eminem, who simply grew up in a poor area) and is therefore entitled to do all the crotch grabbing he likes(however shit in da club was)

It is a statement of masculinity - a visual way of saying "look - see how big my genitals are". The constant re-enforcing of this originated in the rap 'battles' (as portrayed in the film '8 Mile'), where the rappers would grab their crotch to make themselves look more manly, or 'harder', than their opponent.

Strange really, you don't see Missy Elliott shoving her hand up her beaver to make a similar point....

As for Eminem being "made by Dre" - total rubbish. He was making great music before the Dre linkup (check out the Infinite album for proof). Dre & Eminem rode of each other's success - Dre was hardly a household name prior to Eminem being around, and he is now the highest earning producer in the hip-hop genre.

Even though Eminem is seen as 'commercial', his music is still groundbreaking and powerful. The new album (due in September) has some of the best hip-hop ever heard - you can get a couple of the tracks already of Ebay.

Personally i think the only real quality band who emerged from punk were The Stranglers. Unforunately they've spoiled it by limping on too long after Hugh Cornwell left.

dr dre was a household name in america because on nwa,
and when i said he eminem rode off him, i was meaning that he became successful because of him, he wasn't really going anywhere before the dre linkup
