Each FOTB makes about 50K a yr. 4 in a shop thats 200K and it is a total mugs game and why betting shops keep opening despite the rise of online gaming.

That said Vegas Gull has a point. There is so much competition out there that there are plenty of ways of making easy money for little risk if you know your way around betfair. Blue Square made a loss and threw in the towel William Hill have issued a profit warning and slumped down the FTSE100. The phrase you never see a poor bookie isn't always true.

As for the OP I wasn't always a shrewd punter. I was a crap one for ages. Cold turkey is one option and not one I'd not disuade you from if you can do it. Equally learning from your mistakes and becoming a successful punter is possible but never if you bet on everything and anything.

Sit back. £ 660000 a month gambled in ONE shop on 4 machines in ONE month in a fairly quiet shop.

That is spot on. Each machine makes £ 900 profit per week. Ladbokes and William Hill each made around £ 400 000 000 last year on the machines as profit.

The trouble is these days gambling is thrown at you from every direction, internet gambling, smartphone gambling, shops all over the place, adverts on TV and in the papers and in bygone days these were either banned, heavily regulated or simply didn't exist.

I still remember going into a bookies and having to have a 5 team acca on the football and that was the only bet if the game wasn't on TV.

I can understand now how so many people become addicted and it is a very easy situation to slide into and a very difficult one to get out of.

I do not quite understand why the Government target payday loans companies whereas gambling seems totally unregulated.

Advert after advert etc, made cool with people like Wrighty / Kammy talking through their bets etc

Yeah, I thought so, but Justice seems to think he has the skill to outwit the wheel.

I can understand there is a skill to increase your chances of winning at poker, or if you have inside info of who our new manager was going to be. But roulette is just an evening out at the casino for people who can’t play anything else.

Absolutely this. Anyone who thinks that they have a system to beat a game of pure luck, with the odds favouring the house, clearly has no idea how gaming works.

I'm not surprised.

I sometimes go into a bookies at lunch in a run down area near Birmingham - a couple of quid on a dog to pass the time, that kind of thing. I've always loved the bookies ever since the feeling of rebellion when placing bets in the laddies at Fiveways at the age of 16. I've always found one near where I work and invariably struck up conversations with old boys about this or that horse and its chances. They can be a social place and were even better when you could smoke in them (I've long since given up).

The environment has now changed. Whilst the old boys are there, the machines have a different client. Silent. Solitory. Putting note after note into the machine until they run out and the weeks wage is gone on a machine which says on the front that its own launguage that it will rip you off. When the money runs out, some dissapear with their tail between their legs, some get violent but they all come back. The idiots in Government see nothing wrong with this and want to increase the numbers you can have.

Gambling is a great pastime - These machines and the online casino cultures are just horrendous.

I find the laws of odds very interesting. Most people think that their chance of winning on the lottery doubles if they buy twice as many tickets.

1 line = 1 in 14 million
3 lines = 3 in 14 million OR 1 in 4.666 Million is what some will say.

I do 3 lines p/w and see it as 3 lots of 1 in 14 million.

You only ever hear of professional/amateur gamblers making money , you don't hear of professional/amateur gamblers breaking even or eventually making a loss. Amateur gamblers will always lose. My old man was a compulsive gambler , dogs , horses , football etc. Addiction to gambling is the same as being addicted to alcohol , tobacco or hard drugs and to break the habit its a case of taking one day at a time. Good luck Adrie.

Good post. Spot on. Echo your sentiments.

Stay away from FOBTS too, crack cocaine of gambling. It's fine to enjoy the odd bet like a football coupon for a couple of quid, but when it takes over your life, it is time to stop. Stay strong willed and you will overcome.

Best way to gamble on footy is evens and odds on bets (singles, doubles, or a treble at a push) .....look for 10% yield over a season.......then it becomes enjoyable.

The ammount of people doing 6+ team accumulators is unreal.
