[Football] if you could have any player from England's past, at their peak, in the side now.....

Sir Bobby Charlton. Two footed mystro who was dominant in the air. You don’t get that many England caps or goals being crap.

Bryan Robson, a tough tackling, ball winning attacking midfielder. Who, incidentally, scored 26 times in 90 appearances for England compared to Beckhams 17 goals in 115 appearances.

Beckham was a luxury player while Robson would take the game by the scruff of the neck.

Bearing in mind most feel it’s a goal scorer that we still need I’d go for Greaves or Lineker

Gascogne or Hoddle if a midfield maestro

Adams will be busy with Strictly now otherwise what a leader!

In the brave new De Zerbi world, then it has to be Shilton or Banks.

Shilton doesn’t hold a candle to Banks. Banks is the greatest keeper England has ever had. The world was so worried about him in the Mexico WC, he was poisoned.

Having seen him at his peak when even at top International level, he was always head and shoulders above the rest

Gascoigne

Robson degraded his capabilities by softening his body with drink.

Played for ManUre throughout the 80s when they were FA cup show ponies (and cheats).

In the end, modest attainment:

Premier League: 1992–93, 1993–94
FA Cup: 1982–83, 1984–85, 1989–90
League Cup: 1991–92
FA Charity Shield: 1983, 1993
European Cup Winners' Cup: 1990–91

I think it was a dodgy shoulder that kept popping out that did for him

Yes, agree that drinking did not help him but, the question was " which England player in his prime...." .. no fan of Utd under Fergusson and their arrogance and gamesmanship either.

It's hard to see past Gascoigne. Absolute magnificence at his peak.

However in terms of the current team and what it needs I might go for Scholes or Carrick for central midfield. We need someone there who can run the game. Or, in terms of defense probably Ferdinand.

But for sheer joy and magic it's Gazza.

Edit: we're talking for England, right? If it's Brighton then I'm going with...Gascoigne. Or possibly Shearer. But Gascoigne really.
