It could be Alfie, the loveable rogue: at the centre of his community, can't really shrug off the responsibility of old dependants, loses his lovers to seemingly bigger local "faces" yet is ambitious and always wanting to be on the up.

Or maybe Dirty Den - seemingly dead and buried for years, now returned and looking for a new home with all his old skills intact.
