Everyone with the means to get out of the city did so before the deluge.

Clearly those that are left behind will be the old, poor and infirm. Demography and economics in that part of the world dictates that the majority will be black.

I think that's right - the New Orleans metropolitan area containing dormitary towns and suburbs is about two-thirds white and a third black and other minorities. The whites would have had the economic means to relocate quickly. The city itself is about two-thirds black.

i'm suprised people over here havent started 'lets send them money' i dont think so, they are the richest country in the world, pull out of iraq and that will free u loads of money.

It would also completely f*ck over the people of Iraq at this stage. Perhaps the situation would have been controllable if there were plenty of soldiers easily deployable in America, rather than sent overseas for no reason.

I don't think money is the issue, unfortunately it is a cross between desperate poverty, terrible government response and an element of the psyche of part of American society. Nothing at all to do with race, although unfortunately its all to evident that these issues to tend to affect certain ethnic groupings rather than others.

It's one of the poorest areas in the States- dollar a day existence apparently for some people, and not even Denny's goes that low for a meal!

Not sure how this is going to pan out, but I kind of guessed the military would get to treat it like a live firing exercise for the reservists and National Guard. With 52 states of the union, surely it is not beyond logistics to take a couple of 1000 people and move them to another state and let them administer them, at least on a temporary basis. It would get people away from the area and at least give New Orleans a chance to recover what it can.

I can't understand the raptureous descriptions of New Orleans.I've been there twice and I didn't like it. The aggresive panhandlers. both black and white are scary. I think both the local and state governments have been sadly lacking in this disaster.
I believe that in the Dictionary under "Corruption" there should be a street map of New Orleans.

OT a bit, not being harsh, and the most important thing is getting Aid to the people of NO, doesnt matter where it comes from, but how come the US is having to ask us and the EU for food, tents, water, blankets?
