Lennon was half of the greatest song writting partnership that ever existed. He has written songs that epitomise a generation. I don't agree with the 'standard' accusation. Jealous Guy, Working Class hero, Watching the Wheels, Mind Games, Love I could easily go on.. a genius and a one off. I don't think there will ever be another. I agree that they arn't as good individually than as part of the Beatles - but then f***ing hell.. they were Beatles for fucks sake! He is, in my opinion, the most talented Beatle and I think he had the most successful solo career.

Not that I'm knocking McCartney, who is a genius. I just find most people who favour Macca over Lennon do so because of Imagine, and its anti religious message.

RIP John Lennon.

Sorry Biccy but John lost it when he shacked up with Yoko.

It impacted him, yes. I wouldn't say 'lost it' though. Do you own the Lennon Legend album by anychance? OK, its a greatest hits of sorts but its a CD I can listen to, and then listen to again straight after.. I can't say that about many albums.

Borrowed Time, #9 dream, Whatever gets you thru the night, Woman.. just four I can name of the top of my head.. a great song writer who spoke as he saw, and wether you agree with what he said or not, I think you have to respect him for saying it.

Yeah, I think the majority of his solo stuff is pretty standard. It's good, but nowhere near the collective mastery The Beatles could produce.

Imagine
Cold Turkey
Give Peace a Chance
Woman
Working Class Hero
(Just Like) Starting Over

All very mediocre stuff imo.

No, I didn't buy any of his stuff.
I much preferred John when he was doing his raw rock and roll stuff.

Sort of changing the subject, I also feel like you do about Paul Weller & Sting and can't figure out why everyone goes on about their solo stuff. however, I thought that the Jam, The Policy & even the Style Council were brilliant

Then again, into the late 60s, throughout the 70s, he would go on record to say the only music he really listened to was old Elvis, Jerry Lee, Gene Vincent - whereas Macca tried hard, sometimes too hard, to keep up with currents, Lennon quickly gave yp that and retreated into the raw rock'n'roll simplicity of his youth. And why not, indeed...

Some of Yoko's contributions to his work, later than the early Two Virgins-esque, simply-shrieking stuff, is worthwhile - her work on Double Fantasy outdoes John's in some respects.

But like Macca, throughout the Seventies, and probably if he'd gone on into the Eighties, Nineties, er, Noughties, he'd probably be doing some gems, some disappointments, some embarrassments, some beauties...

Paul's latest, "Chaos and Creation...", is superb and serious, but of course there will always be the instinct of "Frog Chorus, eh? Mull Of Kintyre, eh?"

Both of which are fine and under-rated, by the way - "We All Stand Together", especially! It's a lovely melody. Shame about the frogs, that's all...

Oh, and John's first post-Beatles solo album, "Plastic Ono Band" is about as brilliantly, beautifully chilling as can be.

I loved the Frog song. There I have admitted it. My two kids loved it and we all sang together.

One of my favourite albums was Flowers in the Dirt. It was released the year I left school in '89 and was sort of a soundtrack for the summer for me...absolutely amazing album.

Yeah, I remember that album being a real favourite, the first of his contemporary albums I got to buy at the time - "This One", "My Brave Face", "Figure Of Eight". Put a guitar in my hand and I'll as often as not knock out a (haphazard) version of "Put It There"...

One of his Wembley Arena dates, on the accompanying world tour, was the first gig I ever went to - just a bit special!

Working Class Hero - mediocre? I can't agree with that.

 I think we've had this one out before Moya and I don't think we'll ever agree, so lets agree to disagree! :lolol:

In my opinion John Lennon was the greatest song writer of his generation, influencing the world for the better and I think his simple plea of 'imagine' is as important now as it was then, if not more so.

I'm off, I'm gunna stick Here Comes the Sun on and relax.

xx

I saw him at Manchester. Two hours and 45 minutes of magic.

SHIT, without a doubt. Lennon was a preposterous figure in his solo days and would probably be considered even more so if he was still going today.

'Imagine' important? Purlease. It's childish nonsense. And let's not forget the rank hypocrisy of it all.

'Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world.'

Yeah, let's imagine there's no posessions John, you wouldn't have the
money to buy that Manhattan manison for millions and convert an entire room into cold strorage for your fur (culled from innocent animals of course).

'Imagine all the people
Living life in peace'

Yeah imagine John, imagine you didn't beat up your wife and abandon your child - that would have promoted some peace wouldn't it.

Working class hero - MY ARSE.

Sounds like a decent bloke to me. She was probably asking for it and those Manhattan winters can get cold.
