The Brunswick are having a Jazz Weekend and there are some excellent acts on.

Well worth a visit...decent cheap Harveys, excellent ambiance, superb music.

What more could you ask for.

Joe Lee Wilson is a really good Brighton-based powerful soul/jazz vocalist. He sang superbly at my dad's wedding reception.

Can you name-drop a few of the proposed acts?

'Jazz' is a bit of a sweeping title for me, some of it repulses and some of it's wonderful.

I see Bobby Wellins is playing - he's worth seeing

But I agree that 'jazz' is an over-used term: I've even seen it to describe MOR pap like Jamie Cullum and Katie Melua.

He's not wrong though. Some of it sounds like a bunch of guys in the same band all playing a different tune to me. ;philistine:

Look at names I have never heard of, in the hope that one will have an inherent suggestion that it might be something I'd like?
Thanks for the help 'gaffer', I will refer to your superior knowledge, every time I want to waste an evening having paid good dosh to hear something I don't like.

I'll tell you who I think is good - The James Taylor Quartet, man, they are some cool joes and really sweeng.

Fo' some righteous mo' fo's playing jazz-funk, yo' better bend yo' ear to Pee-Wee Ellis, Fred Wesley and Maceo Parker any time any of those those cats breeze through town. The JB's!
They are da BOMB.

(both the above played The Komedia last summer, and were HOT!)

you pompous arse "nmh"

I havent heard of many of them either, however I know the landlord is a great bloke, venue is good, the ambiance excellent, the beer good and its a good night out.

As far as I am concerned that is fine by me. If you want chapter and verse on the artists, most of them had write ups by people and links to their websites.

sensible arse if you don't mind. Anyway, you are advocating people go see bands you haven't heard of just because they are 'jazz'. That IS pompous!

NMH; "Hey everybody, go down the Portland, they have rock acts"

Everybody; "so f***ing what?"

NMH; "I must flounce now, and demonstrate post-menopausal histrionics"

Does the Portland still do rock acts?

I saw some bloke who purported to be the lead guitarist from Saxon's, brother down there many years ago...bloody hell that was a din
