...in the Golden Hinde, Plymouth yesterday. I was watching the Everton match with a pint, in my Albion shirt, and this old-ish fella at the bar pipes up "I support the other lot up the road".
"What, Exeter ?" says I. He shakes his head.
"Torquay ?".
"Nope", he says". "Manchester United".
I rolled my eyes and went back to the match.
"Yeah, I know what you're thinking" he says.
"Well, I don't need to say it then" I said.

Then comes the startling bit. Bearing in mind this bloke must have been in his fifties, he asks me "Manchesters not far from here though, is it ? How far is Manchester from here ?" He was not asking rhetorically - the guy was unsure as to where Manchester actually is. I considered getting the map from the car, but thought better of it and concentrated on my beer until he went away.

I ask you though - its one thing to "support" Manchester United from afar, but to not even know where it IS - that takes some beating.

Easy 10,

There are plenty of British people who will tell you that they "support" Man Utd who have never been to see them play and would be hard pressed to point out where the city was on the map, that by and large is the definition of plastic support.

I would hazard a guess that the bloke you were talking to yesterday has probably never been as far from Plymouth as say Bristol, may never have even left Devon and probably views the Cornish with suspicion.

That slack-jawed yokel couldn't have wound up a wristwatch, believe me. He was totally alone for the 2 hours I was in the pub. Quite easy to see why.
