Is this anything to do with 'neuro-linguistic programming'?

I have absolutely no idea what that means - but some trendy football managers are into it these days. Boothroyd at Watford for one.

Presumably the first bit refers to the turn-taking model, by Milroy I think. To do with recognising oppurtunities for intervention, prompts for agreement, adjacency pairs, etc.

I've managed to forget most of it now.

No idea what they meant, but Wilkipedia seems to know....

Might have guessed the philosphers had something to do with it....

Found that too.

The Linguistic Turn refers to a major development in Western philosophy during the 20th century, the most important characteristic of which is the focusing of philosophy, and consequently also the other humanities, on language as constructing and reproducing reality.

Its basic principles came primarily from the philosophical/linguistic work of Ludwig Wittgenstein and John Langshaw Austin at the beginning 20th century. The "linguistic turn" however had a longer tradition, seizing an older line of language philosophy which was pursued by Wilhelm von Humboldt, Johann Gottfried Herder and Ernst Cassirer in the 19th and beginning of the 20th century.

In the 1970s the humanities recognized the importance of language as a structuring agent. This shift is characterized by regarding reality not as something preexisting but instead as discursively constructed. Philosopers and theorists associated with this method are for example Judith Butler, Luce Irigaray, Julia Kristeva and Jacques Derrida. The "Linguistic Turn" is considered to be one of the main charateristics of postmodernism.

Fascinating.
