This. Do it yourself, don't use one of the companies that are forever phoning everyone.

Not strictly true, but i know what you mean, of course you can do it yourself, but many cannot. Mrs chopper is marketing director for one, they go more down the professional route hence having a marketing department.
Either way you are still indirectly paying that **** lewis, i cannot watch that idiot and is often wrong.
I can ask the missus and get back to you if you want.

Funnily enough, I'm just in the process of claiming back nine years worth of PPI.

I honestly can't remember if I signed up to it or not but I'm damn well sure I'm going to try and get it back.

Any advice on suitable responses when the bank ask why I feel I was miss-sold PPI other than 'I can't recall ever agreeing to it'?

If you cant remember there is absolutely no way they will remember so just tell them you were told you had to buy PPI at the time. Basically the banks haven't got a leg to stand on in terms of challenging a claim the onus is on them to prove you are wrong not you to prove its justified. Also the bank should provide a full break down of the refund so it should be pretty close to the mark.

Do not, I repeat do not, use a PPI company. The banks are being forced to pay back PPI where they think they have mis-sold. You could go back and ask for a break down of the figures but to be honest it probably isn't worth it. Just take the money.

My partner and I have literally just sent letters to all our creditors for the past six years asking if there was PPI included. One has come back and paid £2.5k just like that. Awaiting other replies as we speak.

Just say you were unaware that PPI was included and if you had been aware you would have rejected it as your employer at the time would have paid you full sick pay had you been off.

He made a small fortune last year selling moneysavingexpert.com to moneysupermarket.com , £35M cash , shares worth £25M and potentially another £27M in cash and shares in 2015. He will give £10M to charity though. In 2011 the website earned £16M in referral fees.

Was there any inference the loan might have been rejected without the PPI element ? The adviser would have received a commission payment for signing you up.

No disrespect but how difficult is it to write to a creditor "Hi, here's my account number - did I have PPI ? If so please provide me your reclaim process." ?

I went with a CMC ( claims management company ) in June last year. Their ad said you could claim on PPI from as long as 15 years ago with little or no details of the loan. I went with them as I remembered I had taken out PPI and had no paperwork as the loan had closed six years ago, the loan was from June 2000. Until April of this year I had the sum total of three emails from the CMC and seemed to be getting nowhere. Fortunately for me I do internet banking and I was able to go back ten years on my bank statements, whilst doing this I came across the loan reference number that I needed. I phoned the bank to inquire how far the CMC had got and was told that the bank had closed the claim as there was no information about the original loan supplied by the CMC, I gave the person my loan number, she informed me that PPI was taken out and did I wish to open an a new claim personally, i done this, answered a few questions and within six weeks had been credited over £2000. All for one phone call!! CMC's charge upto 25% + VAT

Hence my point - NEVER use a CMC - they con artists. A number of them have phoned me and I've asked what I would have to do for them to make the claims - each time I have to supply them with ALL the data. Well if I'm doing that then I might as well do the job myself. If they sent me an authority letter to sign to enable them to download my credit record and then they do the hard work from that then I might consider using them. As it is they are a complete waste of time !

Totally agree. Mind you I am unsure as to whether I am legally obliged to pay them anything as they had me sign a consent form for the original claim. I think I will wait and see what unfolds as it could mean I have to pay them over £600 for doing absolutely fu%k all.

They didn't pursue the claim on your behalf after being told by your bank they needed precise information about the loan , why should they be entitled to a fee ?

My thoughts exactly but there is a nagging doubt that the buggers may have this covered in their ' terms and conditions '.

It is very easy. Don't give a penny to the leaches who are trying to get rich by pretending they're some sort of expert. They're not, they just ask for money back on your behalf and take a big chunk for doing what you can do yourself.

I beg to differ - for each of my claims I've written a short one page letter ( templated, I just change the account details ). Only one company has then asked me to fill in anything further and that was a two page questionnaire. From what I've seen ( and been sent ) the claims companies are the ones that create the paperwork. Most of the companies you claim against need minimal paperwork completing.

Go to www.creditexpert.com and sign up for a free trial ( you MUST remember to cancel before the end of the trial though ! ). Download your credit report. It will contain details of all your creditors for the last 7 or so years. Just write to them ( use google to get addresses ) saying you don't have the account number but give your full name, date of birth and the last three addresses you've lived at.

EDIT - I will be expecting 20% of anything you get back having put all the hard work into typing this post !
